Product Description

Today a renewed and vigorous scholarly quest for the historical Jesus is underway. In the midst of well-publicized and controversial books on Jesus, N. T. Wright's lectures and writings have been widely recognized for providing a fresh, provocative and historically credible portrait. Now this paperback edition of Wright's classic work contains even more insight with an all-new introduction by the author.

Out of his own commitment to both historical scholarship and Christian ministry, Wright challenges us to roll up our sleeves and take seriously the study of the historical Jesus. He writes, "Many Christians have been, frankly, sloppy in their thinking and talking about Jesus, and hence, sadly, in their praying and in their practice of discipleship. We cannot assume that by saying the word Jesus, still less the word Christ, we are automatically in touch with the real Jesus who walked and talked in first-century Palestine. . . . Only by hard, historical work can we move toward a fuller comprehension of what the Gospels themselves were trying to say."

The Challenge of Jesus poses a double-edged challenge: to grow in our understanding of the historical Jesus within the Palestinian world of the first century, and to follow Jesus more faithfully into the postmodern world of the twenty-first century.

Our small group did a study on this book. It was incredibly hard to follow. One sentence could literally be half a page long. While I think nt's heart is in the right place, he contradicts and argues with himself so much that sometimes you wonder just what he really thinks. Then again it could be just that I'm not bright enough.

A Catholic taxi driver once quipped to Tom Wright 'If Jesus was raised from the dead, the rest is just rock and roll, isn't it?' What can be more central and key and important to believers than who Jesus was and is, and what he did and said? This book contains, in succinct form, Wright's refreshing (and at times startling) insights into Jesus' person, words and work. Reading this book with a prayerfully open mind and heart, it is impossible to come away without a closer and more vital and real relationship with King Jesus than you began with.

This book proved to be an excellent summary of N T Wright's 3 volume "Christian Origins and the Question of God". It would be hard to appreciate the power of his thoughts in this short volume, but it is even harder to keep track of the main thoughts in the longer version. Both should be read. N T Wright is an outstanding historian and his particular theology, which one might disagree with, does not show through in this excellent discussion of how to understand the context of the Gospels.

Mr. Wright is an honest historian who loves Christ. I appreciated his style of investigation. But this book really opened my eyes to Jesus' appeal to the Jewish nation of His day on earth. He was telling them that He was the fulfillment of the prophesies, and He proved it by rising from the dead. Many times he made reference to the coming judgment on the Jewish nation which would reject Him. Before I read this book, I never understood the passages that way. This has been very enlightening, and I would recommend it highly.

This book was awesome and life changing for me...it spoke to a need I already had, to a position I was already in. Rejected from both liberal and conservative viewpoints, in the wasteland between, extends a truly progressive, and yet evangelical, vision of what following Jesus means. I highly recommend this book, or anything else by Wright, to all people.
