Product Description

Celtic Benedictions is an illuminated collection of newly written daily prayers that draws on the rich stream of devotion flowing deep in the Celtic tradition. For centuries, prayers chanted at the rising of the sun and its setting, at the birth of a child, or the death of a loved one, spoke of God's glory ever-present in creation, in human desires and in physical energies. These original prayers, for each morning and night of the week, are a new expression of that ancient tradition.

Illustrated throughout with the 'everlasting pattern' of Celtic art taken from the Lindisfarne Gospels, Celtic Benediction is truly a book to open the eyes of our hearts in order that we may see God afresh in all things.

Publisher's Description

This lavishly illustrated daily prayer book draws on the great spiritual insights and wisdom of the Celtic church, offering prayers and Scripture readings for every morning and evening of the week.

Each day Celtic Benediction invites readers to meditate on a different aspect of the creation story from Genesis. On Sunday the theme is light. In the morning, the prayers and readings lead us to seek the light of the life of God in all his creatures. At night, we meditate on the light that no darkness can overcome as we bring the world and its needs to God. And so on through each day of the week: water, the fruitful earth, the animal world, humanity, playful rest, and all that God has made draw us into intimate prayer. Related Scripture readings are also given for each day of the year, making this a book to use constantly.

Illustrated throughout with colored panels from the Lindisfarne Gospels, Celtic Benediction offers contemporary Christians a unique devotional experience to treasure for a lifetime.

If you're going to choose your first prayerbook by Philip Newell, your best choice is his "Celtic Treasure," which incorporates a broad sweep of scriptural themes and stories into daily rituals of prayer. (Take a look at our "Major Authors" page on Philip in our bookstore for a review of "Treasure.")
But "Celtic Benediction," a guide to morning and night prayer, is such a terrific choice, as well, that you may want to buy both to immerse yourself in this neo-Celtic style of meditation that is sweeping around the world.
This is another reasonably priced, gorgeously illustrated book, which is in keeping with the Iona tradition of arts and letters.
Not only are these prayers deliberately written with poetic grace in the words of our everyday language, but they also reflect Iona's theology that God's Creation and human life fundamentally are good, rather than something fundamentally sinful. So, these prayers affirm aspects of life that are missing in many guides to prayer.

Editorial Reviews

New Age Retailer
"Celtic Benediction is a wonderful miniature prayer book that honors and evokes the spiritual traditions of the Celts. . . J. Philip Newell has captured the spirit of Celtic prayer in this lovely, powerful book. . . Illustrations of Celtic art from the Lindisfarne Gospels, a 1,300-year-old collection of manuscripts from England, decorate the cover and inside pages. Creatures of earth, sea, and sky are intertwined in flowing vines and intricate knotwork, complementing the remarkable beauty of the words they surround. . . Celtic Benediction makes Celtic spirituality accessible in a profoundly moving yet fully functional way."

The Living Church
"Exquisitely printed and illustrated with multi-colored Celtic decorations."

Spirit & Life
"This beautiful daily prayer book offers brief meditations, prayers and Scripture readings for every day of the week. Not only is the Celtic spirituality heart-warming, but also the many Lindisfarne Gospel illustrations are a feast for the eyes. . . This is a prayer companion for busy Christians and well as contemplatives."

Publishers Weekly
"Eerdmans offers an uncluttered, beautifully illustrated collection of Celtic prayers in Celtic Benediction: Morning and Night Prayer, by J. Philip Newell. Each day begins and ends with these timeless prayers, reflecting on issues such as creation, God's providence and thankfulness. This is a jewel."

Arkansas Democrat Gazette
"Newell makes it luminously apparent that one aim of Celtic devotion is the reconnection of the human soul with what he terms 'the author of its original glory,' and his book is a richly textured means to that end. . . The words in this good, wise and beautifully written book might actually change for the better the character of anyone who engages them with an open heart."

The Midwest Book Review
"This superb compendium compiled by J. Philip Newell, a parish priest and warden of spirituality in the Diocese of Portsmouth, is wonderfully illustrated throughout with colored panels from the Lindisfarne Gospels and will be a treasured and valued addition to any personal, church, or seminary library."
