Tell us a little about yourself. My plans to live a simple, uncomplicated life fell by the wayside. Early in life, I made a commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ, and then often found it difficult to make all the right decisions. As I muddled my way through my early years in Missouri, and then my teen years in Oklahoma, I enjoyed a good life, thanks to my godly parents. When I married and became a parent myself, my relationship with God deepened. My children brought to my life both joy and tears. We laughed our way through the years and the many near-catastrophic experiences they had. Every time I was in distress, I learned more about hearing the voice of my Lord. So often, I knew He heard my prayers and I saw the answers. When my kids swam with alligators, they remained unharmed. When we struggled against all odds to build a two-story house in Florida, we eventually succeeded and survived some dangerous experiences. Then there were other times when I didn't get the answers I wanted. I had to be committed to trust Him even in the darkest of times -- times of loss. But He used even the loss of my son to give me just an inkling of what it was like for Him to give up his son. No experience is lost. He will use everything in our lives to draw us closer to Him. Surviving that loss was possible because of lessons I had learned earlier when my other son was injured. Gods Word says we should give thanks for all things, and I had to become willing to praise Him even when I could see no good in a situation -- like when my "perfect" marriage dissolved -- when my second husband suffered a brain injury and was physically and mentally incapacitated for seven years -- when thunder and lightning brought floods and devastation. Always the Lord remained by my side and provided for my every need. He dispels the fear that tries to creep in and helps me to laugh at the ridiculous situations my naivete has gotten me into.
What was your motivation behind this project? Because God has remained faithful, even when I have not, I very much want to let others know of His love. By showing how He has protected me and guided me through strange and sometimes dangerous situations, and even given me comfort in the middle of them, I hope to encourage others to lean hard on Him in their times of distress and to learn to laugh to keep their hearts light. Laughter is like a medicine and it can drive out fear. And praise to our God, Who is in charge of everything, releases Him to work on our behalf.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope to let others know that they are loved beyond imagination. I hope my funny stories will make them laugh, and my sad stories will show them that our Creator is also our friend and will stand by us to give us a hope and a future. I hope my readers will be entertained and inspired.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Working on this book was an outlet for me during a time when I was nearly homebound with my invalid husband. I was challenged to not only construct the stories in a way that flowed easily but to sort through a lifetime of experiences, sharing those that I felt might either entertain or inspire a reader. I was also challenged technologically in preparing the manuscript for submission. This helped me to sharpen my skills and gave me a goal to work toward during a time when I was emotionally stressed and physically exhausted. Once it was published, I was greatly encouraged and rewarded by the response of my readers. God has blessed me richly!
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My greatest influences were my parents. In one of my earliest memories, my mother was holding me on her lap at bedtime in the upstairs bedroom of our little "Tom Thumb" house in Joplin, Missouri. She told me about God and about the ol' devil. I felt scared, but she assured me that God is the One in control and the ol' devil can't hurt us. That truth has remained with me through the years. She told us Bible stories and taught us about missions while at the same time she taught us about hard work and growing in our relationship with the Lord. She and Daddy lived right more than talked right. My Grandparents also greatly influenced my concepts of love and life, and I've enjoyed sharing a few of their stories. And now my children and grandchildren are my great inspirations. They've kept me on my knees at times, and kept me laughing. They are truly gifts from God!
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: My greatest goal in writing this book is to give God the glory for all the things He's done for me - all the messes He has rescued me from - and all the hope He has poured into my soul. I want others to realize that as much as we mess up, He never gives up on us. He loves us with an everlasting love and is constantly reaching out to us, drawing us to Him, forgiving us, and giving us another chance. My second goal is to bless others -- to entertain them and give them a lift. I'd like to inspire them to see our Heavenly Father as the wonderful, loving Father that He is. I'd like them to get a fresh look at how much Jesus cares for them, and that He is our friend as well as our Lord and Savior. And I hope to prompt them to communicate more with God on a moment to moment basis -- to realize that we can talk with Him through His Holy Spirit just as we would talk with a friend. There are times for formal and passionate prayer, but He also yearns to hear from us about every single thing that concerns us. And my third goal is to bless my family. We've had so much fun together, that I want to preserve those times in our memories. We've also had some tragic experiences and every day, I see the Lord work through those, drawing us all closer to Him and strengthening our spirits, reinforcing the fact that when we praise and trust Him, He truly will work all things together for our good.
