Publisher's Description

Months before Jay's first symptoms appeared, I felt compelled to start keeping a journal. Looking back on those fledgling entries, I recognize now that my decision to begin journaling at that particular time was prophetic.

Writing in that safe place reconnected me to my heavenly Father
during the most turbulent time of my life. As Jay was losing his
battle with ALS, I found myself groping for the journal and pen.

At my lowest times, I found God speaking encouragement to me
through others. Countless times I recorded something in my journals
spoken from the lips of strangers, friends, mentors, and pastors.
These were bits of light and wisdom that I tried to implement in
my hectic life as Jay's wife and caregiver. Now I'm very grateful
they are preserved as a resource during times of trouble.

As you juggle the physical and emotional challenges of being a caregiver or
caring supporter, it is my prayer that this book will provide encouragement,
compassion, affirmation and hope. God will meet you right were you
are, and remain beside you every step of the way. Join Him where He is
already at work. He will equip you to do all that you need to accomplish,
just as He led me through my journey to completion, one step at a time.

We Carried the Mat by Katie Jordan

We Carried the Mat is the personal story of Katie Jordan, and her deceased husband, Jay. Jay was diagnosed with the fatal disease, ALS, and Katie wrote this book for two reasons - to recount the ways in which her husband allowed his testimony to shine through despite his disease, and to provide some measure of encouragement for others who are long term caregivers, particularly of family members with fatal illnesses.

We Carried the Mat refers to the Biblical story in the Gospels where Jesus heals a man after his friends display incredible faith in getting him to Jesus. The crowds prohibit a direct approach, and so the mat-carriers lower the paralyzed man through the roof of the home. Jesus is moved by the perseverance of the man's friends, and forgives his sins. The Pharisees who are present begin grumbling about blasphemy, and Jesus heals the man to show he has power for both physical and spiritual healing.

Katie likens the journey that she and her community of friends go through getting "Jay to Jesus" to that of the mat carriers in the Gospels. It is a compelling parallel, and one of the reasons why I wanted to read this book was to see what impact the faith of others had on the end of life journey of someone whose days are controlled by pain and sorrow. Katie Jordan does a pretty good job of telling that story. I appreciated the dedication of her friends and the difficulties that she and her husband encountered.

Katie Jordan is primarily a passionate wife who wanted to tell everyone about the way in which her family dealt with the difficult circumstances of death and dying. The primary difficulty in her tome is that her voice is a little shrill sometimes - she comes across as less humble and gracious than I think she intends, sounding instead selfish and lacking in empathy. This is more of an impression of certain points than a real criticism - partially it is the lack of practice writing that inhibits her ability to write with the depth and certainty that she intends. Still, there is some practical advice, some helpful information about ALS, and an over-riding sense that Katie Jordan's husband Jay was a special person who had some special help, including a wife who wanted the world to see him the way she did. I imagine writing about such a personal journey wasn't easy, and I commend her for putting herself out there.
