Virtually all of us have a family member or friend who has been diagnosed with cancer. But do we really know how to help? Reflecting on her own journey with cancer, June Hunt offers "practical, yet overlooked ideas" to help caregivers walk through the journey with those they love. Caring for a Loved One with Cancer begins with the first doctors visit and moves through nearly fifty short, single-topic chapters with practical application. These include offering to communicate progress and needs, keeping a record of remembrances, making a chart for medication, fixing food that helps with healing, and others.
Additional chapters cover tips for helping children through confusion, dealing with issues related to cancer treatment, discovering important "donts," and what cancer cannot do. Specifically written for those caring for loved ones battling cancer, this book can also be used by those coming alongside anyone suffering from a debilitating illness.
Hunt provides an especially useful chapter on confronting your sick friends about their spiritual beliefs and starting them on the path to salvation. She also includes technical explanations of what causes cancer, how it affects the body, and how to take care of yourself if you have cancer. The second part of the book need not be separated from the first part; it all blends together well. Chapters range from one to two pages long, making for a quick and easy read. Much of the book reads as a narrative of Hunts own journey, which will make the book more interesting to those who may not be dealing with cancer or caring for someone with cancer.
Several of the chapters include Scripture passages that encourage the cancer patient "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand" (Isaiah 41:10), and admonish friends of cancer patients to "encourage one another daily" (Hebrews 3:13).
While many of the tips in the book may seem obvious, Caring for a Loved One with Cancer serves as an encouraging reminder of just how important true friendship is in the midst of trials and heartache. Anyone dealing with cancer or with the fact that a loved one has cancer will benefit from reading Hunts words. Harmony Wheeler, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
IreneUnited States5 Stars Out Of 5Great ideas for helping someoneFebruary 10, 2012IreneUnited StatesQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Caring For A Loved One With Cancer is written by cancer survivor June Hunt. This book was written for all of us who know someone that is dealing with cancer.
Most of the fifty ways to help someone going through cancer are very practical and can be done by anyone close to the cancer sufferer. Each of the main chapters discusses one of the ways you can reach out and help. The specific ideas are all easy to do and can greatly help someone who is not feeling well. Running errands, keeping a gift/helper journal for them, writing a chart with all of their scheduled medication, and even going to appointments with them and taking notes. All of those are great ideas and just a few of the many the author lists in this practical yet helpful book.
The book also contains ways to help children understand what is happening to their loved one. It also lists things that are and are not helpful when personally dealing with cancer. Although this book was written for all who know someone with cancer, I really felt it was more geared for woman who have girlfriends who are fighting the disease. The author writes in a loving and open manner. All the information presented is helpful and worth reading if you are close to someone who is dealing with cancer or really any debilitating illness.
