Publisher's Description

Michigan Territory, 1814

A voyageur and a young woman swept up in a time of upheaval and danger
discover firsthand the high price of freedom.

The British Army has taken control of Michilimackinac Island and its fort, forcing the Americans to swear an oath of loyalty to the crown in order to retain their land. Pierre Durant is a fur trader who returns after being away from the island for years, only to find the family farm a shambles and those he cares about starving and at the mercy of British invaders.

Torn between the adventurous life of fur trading and guilt over neglecting his defenseless mother, Pierre is drawn deeper into the fight against the British--and into a relationship with Angelique MacKenzie, a childhood friend who's grown into a beautiful woman. She now finds herself trapped by the circumstances of war and poverty, and the cruelty of her guardian, Ebenezer Whiley.

As tensions mount and the violence rages on, Pierre and Angelique must decide where their loyalties rest and how much they'll risk for love.

I'm reviewing "Captured By Love", the third book in the Michigan Brides Collection by Jody Hedlund. I believe this is the first book I have read by this author.

"Captured By Love" is about a young woman that must choose between two brothers, the one she is engaged to or the one she loves. The one brother is dependable and the other is wild and carefree. Will she choose the safe choice or love? The setting of the story is during the War of 1812 on Michilimackinac Island, or what is know today as Mackinac Island in northern Michigan.

I liked how the author wove God's love and forgiveness into the story. She did so without it seeming fake or preachy. The characters seemed real, they were proud, selfish, and sometimes had a hard time choosing to do the right thing. They made mistakes but also asked forgiveness and kept moving forward in their walk with God. I think I saw the most change and spiritual growth in Pierre. I thought the author made a very good point about God being our Solid Rock and no matter our circumstances if we lean on Him, He will take care of us. I also enjoyed the author's note at the end with the history of the island and the information about fur trading. I have two problems with the book, one minor and one major. First the minor, I think the author overused the word "stiffen". I don't know if it's because my review copy is missing double fs so I noticed it more, but this is the second book by two different authors that I felt overused the word. The second and major issue I have with this book is too much physical contact and romance between the characters. I enjoy romance and kissing, but I think a Christian novel should hold higher standards. We don't need to read about the characters kissing and their attraction to each other almost every time they see each other. There were a few references to sex as well, and although it wasn't graphic or vulgar, I just wouldn't recommend this book to anyone other than an adult. This book drew me in from the beginning, I read about a quarter of the book in one night. I felt the characters not being able to make up their minds did get a little tedious, but it was still an enjoyable read.

Set on Michilimackinac Island, Angelique MacKenzie endures a hard life. Having lost her parents, she is forced to live with Ebenezer Whiley (her cruel step-father), provide food for herself and the British Army invading the island, care for her elderly blind friend, and become betrothed to a man she respects but doesn't love. When Pierre Durant returns after many years away to find his childhood friend, Angelique, all grown up, they both must decide where their loyalties and hearts truly lie_

Wow. Jody Hedlund does not disappoint! Through adventure, suspense, romance and history, the author tells a tale so artfully told it was hard to put down. Now a popular tourist spot, the telling of the history of Michilimackinac (Mackinac) Island was so very interesting and accurate. Alive with canoes, the Great Lakes, wilderness, forts and fur trading, the story was authentically real. Combined with those elements is a deep storyline strewn with pieces of faith which just keeps progressing. I only hope Jody Hedlund is in the writing process of her next book already. Again_wow.
