"A gripping tale told by a gifted writer."--Beverly Lewis

Caroline Fletcher is caught in a nation split apart and torn between the ones she loves and a truth she can't deny

The daughter of a wealthy slave-holding family from Richmond, Virginia, Caroline Fletcher is raised to believe slavery is God-ordained and acceptable. But on awakening to its cruelty and injustice, her eyes are opened to the men and women who have cared tirelessly for her. At the same time, her father and her fiance, Charles St. John, are fighting for the Confederacy and their beloved way of life and traditions.

Where does Caroline's loyalty lie? Emboldened by her passion to make a difference and her growing faith, will she risk everything she holds dear?

Caroline Fletcher knows slavery is wrong. Her father's slaves have been more family to her than her own father and mother. But no one else in the South seems to be bothered with it. And when the Civil War starts Caroline has to decide if she'll do what God is telling her to even if it means losing her friends and the one she loves.

"Candle in the Darkness" is set during the Civil War in Richmond, Virginia. The book starts with Caroline as a child and shows us how she came to believe what she believed. It then takes us through her adolescence and through the Civil War. Overall, it's a pretty interesting story about standing up for what you know is right even when everyone's against you. Eli, Caroline's slave who hopes to be a preacher when the slaves are set free, delivers so many messages of God's love and faithfulness!

"Candle in the Darkness" is a long beautiful tale, so if you have a number of hours on your hand be sure to check it out. It is the first of three books, the others being "Fire by Night" and "A Light to My Path."

This book has a wow-factor. What an excellent author Lynn Austin is! She was able to captivate me from the start. She weaves a good knowledge of history into an intriguing story, that is uplifting and believable at the same time. This book is a gem among many others. I read more of her hand, but found this one the best so far. Although I can recommend each and every book of her. This book shows an integrity, that is a rare find. You follow a young woman during the civil war and learn to understand why she made certain choices. The characters are beautifully depicted and the reality of that time creeps up on you. It is rather rare, that I can't put a book down, but this one kept me going through the night. My highest recommendation. It also makes an excellent gift.
