This is an outstanding Bible resource for children ages 8 -12. Children rarely have a natural interest in studying the Bible. In fact it can be quite intimidating to them. It is our responsibility as parents, grandparents, and Sunday school teachers to not only teach them about God's word, but also to encourage an interest to study it. The Candle Bible Handbook is just the resource to aid in this.

It gives them their very own Bible study book they can use on their own.

I loved the flexible cover. It wasn't a paperback or a hard back, but sturdy and easily handled. The pages are quality paper than will hold up to lots of use.

The maps, illustrations, and pictures were outstanding! They were very colorful and gave excellent visuals of places and people being studied.

There is a chapter for all Old Testament and New Testament books. Each book of the Bible begins with a brief, concise, easy to read synopsis of what it is about. Also included are "Frequently Asked Questions", things that a child would naturally wonder about. Next is an outline of that book, divided into the main parts that are covered and contains the chapters and verses where they are found. A simple explanation of what occurs in those sections is included.

A part called, "Look Out For", alerts the child to important truths and lessons that occur. There are also "Study Questions" with scripture references for the child to look further into what he has studied. Scattered throughout the book are words that a child might not understand. The word is thoroughly explained and many times scripture references are given. In the back of the Bible Handbook these words are listed with the definition so they can be referred to without having to go back through the chapters.

Also in the back are more excellent resources. "Promises of the Bible" and "Fifty Very Important Passages" Are listed. I liked the use of bold print for the subject and italics for the scripture reference in these two sections. It made it easy to read. Last of all is "Who's Who in the Bible", where the most prominent Bible characters are listed with a small paragraph telling about each one.

This is a lot of information but each page is arranged where it is easily accessed. The title, Candle Bible Handbook is very appropriate. Psalm 119:105 tells us God's word, " . . . is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." This is a perfect resource for young, beginning, Bible scholars to find that "light".

I received this book free from Kregel Publications. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Perfect for a child's first Bible reference book and appropriate or ages 7 and up.

Bible handbooks are great tools to have on hand to enrich and/or enable study of the Bible. It greatly facilitates locating key information and can be used to generate interest in specific topics. The Candle Bible Handbook is just such a tool and it is geared for the young or new-to-Bible-study individual.

Beautifully illustrated with drawings, maps, diagrams, and photographs and coupled with concise text, this book will prove to be an invaluable tool for home, church library, or school.

It begins with how the Bible is organized and then follows sections on each book in the Bible which include Frequently Asked Questions, Study Questions, Outline, and appropriate illustrations and maps. I found it interesting that it covers "Jerusalem in the Time of Jesus," "Life in Jesus' Time," The Parables of Jesus," "Paul's Missionary Travels," etc.

Following the books of the Bible, the back of the Candle Bible Handbook includes "Big Ideas in the Bible" such as Atonement, Covenant, Grace, Forgive, Salvation. A Who's Who in the Bible in the Old and New Testaments provides a brief biographies of key people.

As with all good reference books, Candle Bible Handbook includes an Index in the back. The organization and information in Candle Bible Handbook will also aid in learning how to study using reference books. Truly this is a gem to place in the hands of caring parents who wish to guide their children in learning about the Bible. I just wish I had one available when I was raising my children.

DISCLOSURE: I was provided a complimentary copy by Kregel Publishing on behalf of Candle Books an imprint of Lion Hudson in exchange for my honest review. Opinions expressed are solely my own. I was not compensated for this review.

The Candle Bible Handbook brings the Old and New Testaments of the Bible to life by combining visual as well as scriptural information about all sixty-six books of the Bible. There is an outline of each book along with frequently asked questions and plenty of interesting information that allows for a very good overview of each book of the Bible there are even study questions included for further thought. I found the illustrations to be top notch enhancing the subjects. I have actually been studying the Tabernacle in the Wilderness and the illustrations and information included was invaluable to me in helping me visualize the tabernacle. There is also a list of the promises in the Bible, along with important passages, important people and big ideas that will further enhance the usefulness of this wonderful reference book. While the book is geared toward 8-12 year old group it really is a perfect companion for those of any age that want's to familiarize themselves with the major elements of the Bible. Great for home study or any teaching forum for that matter, an invaluable tool that really brings the Bible to life a perfect building block for anyone wanting to study their Bible.

A complimentary copy of this book was provided for review.

The Candle Bible Handbook is a very colorful and sturdy reference book that goes all the way through the Bible - book by book. It's filled with interesting facts, information, "frequently asked questions", and even study questions for each book. The maps, timecharts, pictures, and photos are of excellent quality and great additions to this resource. This book also has topics in the appendix that cover more on the "big" ideas, promises, and people of the Bible.

As I went through this book, God used it to inspire an increasing desire to go through His Word more regularly and deeper with my kids. This is not a devotional-type book, but would be an excellent resource to add to our learning. I would recommend The Candle Bible Handbook for families and homeschoolers, but also for an easy go to reference book for Christians to add to their Bible studies.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from Kregel Publications in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I love the opportunity to review a book, especially one that could be used by children or adults. I wasn't at all sure what to expect from a 'Bible handbook." But I was impressed as soon as I opened it.

This book is a high quality book, a sturdy cardstock like cover that has tabs that could mark your place in the book, and the inside pages are a heavy high quality shiny paper. So from the start it has a great look and feel.

This Bible handbook is an overview of all the books of the Bible. Each book has an Outline, FAQ, Look out for, and Study Questions. There are also pictures throughout- some are real images and some are detailed and beautiful drawn illustrations, all have captions.

In addition there are also some solid overviews and timelines, that pull together some of the big concepts in the Bible. (like Jesus miracles, parables, the tabernacle, Jerusalem,...) The appendix at the end shares some other helpful info like key Bible characters, key passages/promises, and key big ideas in the Bible.

I know other reviewers were puzzled as to the target or audience of this book, and I would say it is for a new Bible reader or a repeat Bible reader who wants support. It's a nonfiction book that is meant to pull together the concepts, books, and people of the Bible together. In some ways it could be like a 'cliff notes', I think that when you start reading through the Bible, many people need support to build connections, summarize, and synthesize their reading. Many people just give up when they read their Bible alone. This book would definitely help bridge the gap for a lay person who wants support or guidance as he reads the Bible for the first time, or the tenth time, but with a new purpose in mind.

This book would help you choose a theme or concept and see it across both the Old Testament and New Testament. Or if you wanted to read the Bible through in a year, it would help give you an overview and focus, even comprehension checks as you complete a book reading.

So many people who read the Bible lack formal Bible education and are afraid to seek support, or even choose a helpful study Bible. This book would fill in that gap, is a great visual resource, as well as a synthesis several layers of the Bible. I believe it would be a helpful resource for children or adults who are reading through the Bible.

I believe that when I do a book study I will consult the overview in this book for my own personal study, and I know that when I teach Sunday School or children, this book will have helpful images, charts, and definitions as I prepare to lead a discussion. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it.

I was given this book as a part of Kregel's blog tour, all ideas and opinions are my own.
