Ellie Poole Ewoldt debuts with a memoir of desperate hope and fierce love of a family who refused to give up even when they heard the worst possible news for their two-year-old son, Chase. Moment by moment, the Ewoldts faced brain surgery and chemo, spinal taps and transfusions. And yet, the true miracle lay not in the medicine or Chase’s prognosis – rather, Chase’s life shows us the miracle of hope, even through the darkest nights. If there is anything he and the Ewoldts have learned, it is that God is always good and will stay at your side through every moment, no matter what it holds.

The Modest Maiden5 Stars Out Of 5A Must Read BookMay 2, 2016The Modest MaidenQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book was a beautiful story of a two year old boy, his family, their faith, and the fight against cancer. It was a book that blessed me to read -- the faith expressed in this book, despite the many trials and fears faced by the Ewoldt family, is simply inspiring.
The book chronicles the years long journey God brought Ewoldt family through, and the struggles they faced through multiple surgeries, faulty central lines, chemo, radiation, and facing the possibility of the death of their young son, as well as chronicling how they found joy in the Lord and strength in Him through all of it.
I enjoyed the way the parents interacted with Chase, putting things in a manner a two year old could understand. During surgery, he would go for a "nap" with the doctor. He had "tubies" (a central line) in his chest that was wrapped with a "taco" -- an ace bandage to keep them from pulling out. He would say that he was "so brave" anytime he was scared.
I also appreciated the grace of God in Chase's life in that he could still remember the last Scripture he had memorized -- Joshua 1:9. "Be strong and of good courage, do not fear, for the Lord thy God is with you withersoever thou goest." At a time when the mass of cancer was shifting the median of his brain, at a time when he shouldn't even have been able to speak or think, he could recite Scripture, God's own precious promises, and comfort himself. And I admire the Ewoldt family for teaching their children to memorize Scripture, to store it in their heart -- even working with the two year old!
I loved how honestly this book was written -- not glossing over the hard parts but embracing them and sharing them with readers, so they could find hope in the midst of their own trials. Writing this book after this journey of cancer, she chose to immerse herself and her family back into the reality of all that went on, stirring up painful memories, reliving the joyous ones, and for that I am thankful....This is a book I would give to anyone facing a life changing trial, a trial of faith, a struggle with sickness. It offers hope through the lives of a family, it encourages strongly, rebukes gently, and teaches you to choose to cling to the joy of Christ through all of it!
This is a book suitable for the whole family -- right now my 13 year old sister has borrowed it. The style of the writing is easily read, and it is easy to follow the story line. The way Mrs. Ewoldt writes about Christ is wonderful and awe-inspiring. It is a tear jerker -- I literally had tears running down my cheeks -- but I am also really very emotional as well. Especially when it comes to true-to-life books about little children!
I am not going to tell you how the book ends -- but I very strongly recommend that you read it and find out for yourself =) It will change your perspective of many different things about your life -- things you struggle with, things you are frustrated with, and your general attitude about all of it.
"In my tired heart I long for the once-and-done lesson, but as my dear friend....reminds me before nearly every procedure to this day, if I were given my wish for ease, what reason would I have to abide in Him? The darkness of the ongoing struggle makes the Light that much more beautiful. If it were not so continually dark, If life were only difficult once and no more, I would miss the comfort and warmth of the ever-present Light."

Chase Away Cancer is based on actual real-life events in, 2-year old, Chases life while he perseveres through cancer. The focus is mainly on Chase, but also there is shown how Chase and his family place their faith and focus on God. There were many people touched by the events in Chases life. Chase amazingly remained brave through it all, even when facing fears. His childlike perspective on the things happening around him touched my heart in the way only a child can see things; tubies, a nap with the doctors, Im so brave, magic, and many other quotes.
This is what we were all created to do. Persevere. Press in and run. Life is hard and often includes the road less traveledwith many more miles than we bargained forbut the prize is better than we can imagine. (Ewoldt, 2016, p. 226)
From its very first pages Chase Away Cancer struck me on a very personal level. I have a 2-year old boy; well, hell be 2 at the last part of May. I could see the what ifs.., imagining what if this was my son. Tears uncontrollably ran down my face in many sections of my reading Chase Away Cancer. In addition to tears, there were also parts where my heart was warmed with a smile. God allows for things to happen in life for His purposes, which are beyond our level of understanding and comprehension. However, that fact does not always erase the hurt and frustration we often feel as we are submerged in all of lifes bitter circumstances. In those times we must remember, His ways are not our ways and understanding those ways often rises far above our logic and reason of them. (I know, a lot easier said then done.) Be still, and know He is God.
I recommend Chase Away Cancer! Chase, I greatly admire your bravery and courage in such a scary world!
Bonnie5 Stars Out Of 5Chase Away Cancer - a story of faith and courageApril 17, 2016BonnieQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0What would you do if your two year old son was diagnosed with cancer? How would you react if you were told it was not only cancer, but brain cancer? I imagine you'd react with a heart filled with terror and a million questions. That's exactly what happened to Bob and Ellie Ewoldt when they found out their youngest child, Chase, was facing the biggest battle of his little life.
When I received a complimentary copy of Chase Away Cancer, from Tyndale House Publishing, I was excited to read the book. After having been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I thought the book would hold valuable information for me on how to deal with my own fight against the dreaded "Big C". But while this book was about a child's struggle with cancer, it was also the story of his parents' great faith in God.
The story opens as Ellie Ewoldt discovers she's pregnant with her fourth child. As she and her husband ponder over baby names, they come up with the name Chase "because it mirrored our prayer that this son would run hard after God," Ellie says in her book. It was important to the Ewoldts that their children grow up to love the Lord and as they carefully selected their new baby's name, they offered up a prayer for wisdom and strength.
Chase was born a normal little boy. As he grew, he was filled with energy. He was strong and determined from the very beginning. One day, his mother noticed something was wrong when Chase couldn't remember the name of a snack he wanted. His father thought it wasn't a big deal, just a fluke, kids forget things...but his mother had the intuition that something wasn't right, so she called the pediatrician and set up an appointment. At first, the doctor thought it was a stomach virus. Xrays were done and they thought perhaps Chase was just constipated. Then Chase began drooling and vomiting. His speech was suffering. At the advice of their regular pediatrician, the Ewoldts agreed to have Chase monitored for brain seizures. Before the test could be performed, Chase had a seizure at home. His frightened parents called 911 and their son was quickly whisked off to the hospital where a myriad of tests were performed. A CT scan revealed a large mass inside Chase's head and in an instant, their whole world changed.
The Ewoldts began to question why their little one was having to go through this terrible ordeal. For a fleeting moment, Mrs. Ewoldt even wondered if Chase's tumor was somehow a punishment for past mistakes she'd made in her life, but a friend of the family quickly reminded her that Chase's ordeal was "part of a sovereign, gracious plan that far exceeds what we know and understand at this time." I loved a quote Mrs. Ewoldt shared just after having had this thought. She says, speaking about Jesus, "His love takes us down paths we would never dream of entering by our own volition as part of His sovereign plan for our lives." Only a person of deep faith could take that perspective during a family trauma!
I enjoyed reading this book because throughout the drama of an unexpected medical crisis, Ellie Ewoldt never lost hope in Christ. She clung tightly to her faith and allowed God to use the experience to draw her nearer to Himself. The book was a fast read because it was a true life drama and was written so the reader would be immediately engulfed in the story. Ms. Ewoldt's words were descriptive and clear giving great detail into their day to day journey into the world of brain cancer. She shared both the good and the not so good times as she and her family endured months and months of tests, treatments, surgeries, and illness. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about real life events or anyone searching for evidence of how to rely on personal faith in the face of unexpected illness.
