The Calvert Language Arts Grade 1 curriculum is comprised of two teacher's guides, ten student workbooks, and 5 beginning readers. Each full-color student workbook features a basic worksheet instruction followed by the exercises; lesson instruction comes from the teacher. Workbooks feature 3-5 sections, self-test sections, and a final unit test. The teacher's guides include reduced-size student pages with the correct answers overlaid in addition to the main lesson to teach, concepts taught in the lesson, teacher goals, spelling words, reading instruction, vocabulary notes, and activities. This kit also comes with 5 colorful beginning readers that help build phonics fluency and sight word recognition.
This program offers a gentle introduction to reading and covers the alphabet, short vowel sounds, rhyming words, adding -ing, consonant digraphs, soft c, soft g, verbs, blends, silent letters, long vowels, syllables, r-controlled vowels and plural words, vowel digraphs and sentences, possessive words, diphthongs, and contractions.
