Dr. Kent and Amber Brantly moved with their children to war-torn Liberia in the fall of 2013 to provide medical care for people in great needto help replace hopelessness with hope. When, less than a year later, Kent contracted the deadly Ebola virus, hope became what he and Amber needed too.
When Kent received the diagnosis, he was already alone and in quarantine in the Brantly home in Liberia. Amber and the children had left just days earlier on a trip to the United States. Kents personal battle against the horrific Ebola began, and as thousands of people worldwide prayed for his life, a miraculous series of events unfolded.
Called for Life tells the riveting inside story of Kent and Ambers call to serve their neighbors, as well as Kents fight for life with Ebola and Ambers struggle to support him from half-a-world away. Most significantly, Called for Life reminds us of the risk, the honor, and the joy to be known when God and others are served without reservation.
Ebola threatened his life but God had other plans. The miracle story of Kent and Amber Brantly inspires everyone to serve other and make the most of life's experiences.
Dr. Kent and Amber Brantly (with David Thomas) tell of Dr. Brantly's near-death encounter with the Ebola virus in Liberia. The first American diagnosed during the 2014 outbreak, Dr. Brantly's ordeal--including his controversial evacuation to and hospitalization in the United States--received worldwide media attention. Interspersed in the account is the full story of how both Kent and his wife, Amber, sought to serve others in the name of Christ in Liberia. Then, when tragedy struck--as thousands, perhaps millions of people worldwide prayed for his life--miraculous events unfolded that resulted in Dr. Brantly's flight to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta...and an eventual clean bill of health.
him that, he smiled and said, It wasnt that great for me either! But Kent gives
God the credit for saving his life and surviving the deadly Ebola virus that infected
him while serving others in the name of Jesus. Dr. Brantly and his wife, Amber,
went obediently to Liberia to serve with Samaritans Purse as medical missionaries,
and were the recipients of prayers from around the world as they battled an attack
that threatened their future. The world watched as Kent was successfully trans ported back to the United States from Africa. International media outlets captured
his every step as he walked from the ambulance into Atlantas Emory University
Hospital, where he found physical restorationa miracle from God. You will be
riveted by this extraordinary couple who are called for life to serve the Lord Jesus
Christthe Great Physician!" Franklin Graham, president and CEO, Samaritans Purse
and Billy Graham Evangelistic Association
"When hope seems dim, Called for Life reminds us of the limitless possibilities of
a God- driven life. Dr. Brantlys story inspires us to stay strong in the unexpected
crises of life, to be encouraged to recall Gods promises, to be challenged to
examine our own commitment to Gods call on our lives." Max Lucado, pastor and best-selling author
"Compelling, factual, and emotional, Called for Life draws readers to reflect on their own journeys to faith in Christ and encourages them to trust God in the
crises of life." Nancy Writebol, SIM missionary to Liberia and fellow Ebola survivor
"Kent and his wife, Amber, have truly lived by the phrase When the going gets
tough, the tough go back to their calling. Their great compassion for the sick and
brokenchoosing to suffer alongside them even in the face of possible death
has touched and saved many lives. I am thrilled to see the Brantlys share their amazing story in print, and I know it will inspire and challenge you to find your place in Gods calling upon your life." Dr. Ravi Zacharias, author and speaker
"Called for Life invites all of us behind the curtain of the news stories and press
releases and into the Brantlys lives during the most trying of times. Their love
for each other, their faith and courage, as well as the strength and support they received from their network of friends, family, and caregivers is heartwarming and inspiring. When we set out to just do what is right, this behind-the-news-flash story reminds all of us that we live in a global community, that we all have a role to play, and that all of us can make a difference, wherever we are and in whatever profession."
Lisa Hensley, virologist and deputy director at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, Integrated Research Facility
"As you walk alongside them on their journey, Kent and Ambers poignant story
will touch your heart, move you to tears, strengthen your faith, and cause you to
trust God more." David Stevens, MD, MA (Ethics), CEO of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations
"Called for Life tells the rest of the storywhat went before, lay behind, and follows after the iconic images of a coverall clad figure gently stepping out of an ambulance and into an international spotlight. Kent and Amber have given us a glimpse inside their previously private world to uncover the roots of their genuine humility, tender love for each other, and deep compassion for their neighbors. Not all readers will fully resonate with their interpretations, but all will surely appreciate their candor, sensitivity, and sincerity, and the beauty, and suspense of a story well told." David McRay, MD, professor at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine
"There are many books about surviving illness, but this is a one-of-a-kind story.
What happens when ordinary Christian medical missionaries are caught up in an
extraordinary world crisis? Though I know the story, I found my heart pounding
as I turned the pages. And it turns out to be a tale not of disease, primarily, but of
calling, faith, and love. It is a story of a remarkable family, their community, and
their commitment to a hurting world and to God." Randy Harris, spiritual director and instructor, Abilene Christian University
"Knowing Kent and Amber personally, I can say that Called for Life is a deep and
honest testament to Gods working in the midst of suffering and crisis. Kent and
Ambers voices come through the pages in a very authentic way, and you will experience all Kents emotions as he walks through this journey. As an Ebola survivor myself, I wholeheartedly recommend this book." Rick Sacra, MD, SIM missionary
"Refreshingly, the Brantlys never give trite answers to complex questions like How
does God work in healing? or Why is there suffering in the world? Instead, what they give us is a story their story, and its one worth reading." Jonathan Storment, preaching minister at the Highland Church of Christ and co-author of Bringing Heaven to Earth
Eva P. Scott5 Stars Out Of 5Riveting Story of LoveMay 7, 2017Eva P. ScottQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The behind-the-scenes story of the Dr. Kent Brantly's fight for life against Ebola is riveting.
It tells the story of the team that made his recovery possible, the many people who prayed for him around the world, and his and his wife's thoughts as he was going through the ordeal.
He tells of people in Liberia who were selfish and died trying to help others.
This book would be interesting for people who work in the medical field, laboratory work, or missions. Since he is a doctor, and his wife is a nurse, they tell things that would be of interest to people in those fields.
Love motivates people to do risky things, and it is not always understood by people who don't understand God's love for us.
Very inspiring book.

The very honest and inspiring story of the Brantley family as well as many others who suffered and/or served through the ebola crisis in West Africa.
Kent and Amber Brantley give us a very personal glimpse into their story and their desire to glorify God through it.
Kent's compassion to love and serve the Lord and others is so very evident throughout.
SusanH5 Stars Out Of 5Great Book!January 17, 2017SusanHQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I really enjoyed reading the account of the Brantly's experience. I liked being able to see the situations from each of their perspectives, and I loved the story of how God brought them together. The insight into their lives was enjoyable and remarkable. Their honesty about the struggles and trusting God in every crisis was inspirational as well as informative. I thank God for people willing to go and serve in these dangerous areas of our world. Their story challenged me to do more to love my neighbor in Jesus' name as He leads me. Thank you to Kent and Amber for being obedient to God's call on their life.
I highly recommend this book.

It is well written, always Biblical and Kent and Amber are transparent with their struggle and emotions from day one
I appreciated that the medical aspect of Kent's treatment was put in laymen's language so that it is easily understood. Nothing is sugar coated and the emotions as noted above reveal the real struggles that we as believers have. There is no anger with the Lord because of Kent's contracting ebola .The spiritual struggles are shared as well as the physical. ones
Kent and Amber realized the importance and power of prayer and had already developed a prayer network. I believe it was in answer to prayer and the sacrificial care received from fellow Dr's. and nurses that permitted Kent to recover. His desire to serve the Lord was reinforced through this extremely difficult time in their lives. This is so much more than a biography,it is a record of a very real life and death struggle. We plainly see when we handle our trials in a Biblical manner,we are are comforted and are able in turn to encourage others. Well done and I highly recommend this book to help strengthen your walk with Christ especially in time of trial and testing.
This book was receive from WaterBrook press for my evaluation.
GrandaddyAAge: Over 65Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Serving God Means Serving OthersNovember 7, 2015GrandaddyAAge: Over 65Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is an amazing story of God working in and through the lives of a couple who answered His call on their lives to serve others. I recall the Ebola breakout because of the reports received from another organization that was involved in Sierra Leone. However, I was not keeping up with details of specific cases. I was greatly moved by the commitment Kent and Amber made to serve God and by all that they went through as he fought for his life against Ebola. It is difficult to fathom the extent to which that affected both of them and all those around them. I can only guess at how hard it was for them to have to be separated from each other during this time. I have sat by my wife's hospital bed as she has gone through some serious illnesses and health issues but nothing like they experienced. What a testament to their faith and love! I highly recommend this book especially to married couples who may need a wake-up call such as this to help them see that what they are going through is nothing compared to the experiences of Kent and Amber.
