    A PLACE CALLED HEAVEN

By Dr. Robert Jeffress [Grand Rapids MI, Baker, 2017].

Robert Jeffress is the pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas Texas. In recent years he is also known for his political views and as a Fox News contributor. He has written a book that will have universal appeal to all that are curious about heaven. He does so in a very refreshing way, not as an academic, but as a pastor of people. His style is welcoming, speaks to the average person, and is an encouragement to those who read it.

I especially liked his first chapter in which he gives us the benefits of thinking about heaven. Such a focus does 4 things for us here and now: (1) It reminds us of the brevity of our earthly life. (2) Prepares us for the certainty of judgment. (3) Motivates us to live pure lives. (4) It places our suffering in perspective.

He explains that Heaven is not a state of mind, but a sobering reality that each of us must confront one way or another. We all face mortality.

Jeffress asks fundament questions that all of us have. He deals with the subjects concerning heaven head on. This includes near-death experiences; at death do we immediately go to heaven; the Old Testament saints relationship to Heaven; tries to separate fact from fiction; will we know one another in Heaven; and what we will do in heaven. He also deals with common myths about God and Heaven.

The book is also evangelistic in that he deals with hell and how to enter heaven. It is Scriptural. Upholds the finished work of Christ. It is an enjoyable, reader friendly, reassuring and encouraging to the reader. Well researched. All who read it will benefit.

I received this book from Baker Books of Grand Rapids, Mi. in return for a review but was under no obligation to provide a favorable review.

Why read another book on heaven? Jeffress writes, "...the more we think about the next world the more effective we become in this world." (17) Thinking about heaven reminds us of the brevity of life and the certainty of future judgment. It motivates us to live God pleasing lives and it places suffering in perspective.

There were some aspects of this book that make it a good one to read. Jeffress writes about the present heaven where God resides now and where Christians go when they die. He also writes about the future heaven that Jesus is constructing for us and John described in Revelation. Jeffress says the topic confuses many Christians but he explains it well. I had not thought of these two heavens and I am glad he clarified it for me.

He also writes about the "I went to heaven" experiences. He reminds us that Scripture is our measuring rod for those who make such claims. I really like that he suggests such books might make us think that the Bible does not tell us all we need to know about heaven. Jeffress includes many criteria for evaluation so that we are not taken in by such accounts.

I found his section on what we will be doing in heaven interesting too. For example, he writes about Christians ruling and reigning with Christ. Jeffress writes, "Those who will rule and reign with Christ in the new world will be those who have the desire and ability to rule." (111) If leadership responsibilities terrify us, we can relax. Chances are we will be working with our hands rather than directing people. (111) Jeffress adds this about leading in heaven, "The single greatest determiner of leadership responsibilities in the next life will be faithfulness to God in this life." (112) I am still thinking about that.

Jeffress writes about hell too. He is a firm believer in its existence and that it is the destiny of many.

That gives potential readers an idea of what the book is like. Even though I have read many books on heaven, I still found new insights in this one. It is a good book for those who have not read much about heaven too. Many questions about it are answered, based on what the Bible says.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Icon Media. My comments are an independent and honest review.

"A Place Called Heaven" by Robert Jeffress is a great title for anyone who wants to, as the title says, learn more about heaven. Around 240 pages, the book addresses many topics, some of which are:

    1. The more we think of heaven, the more effective we will be on earth.

    2. 4 ways thinking about heaven benefits life on earth.

    3. 7 principles for evaluating so-called "near death experiences".

    4. Descriptions of where the righteous (accept Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord) and unbelievers go immediately after death.

    5. 3 myths about God and heaven.

    6. 3 activities believers will enjoy in the new heaven and new earth.

    7. Nothing we have said, thought, or done will escape God's scrutiny.

    8. 5 types of crowns believers can receive from Jesus.

    9. 4 signposts that point the way to heaven.

    10. 6 practical steps to take to prepare for the journey to heaven.

The book is well-written, easily understandable (whether or not you may agree with the author's viewpoints), and smoothly transitions from topic to topic. The only issue I have is with his analogy about Jim Marshall's running to the wrong end zone that resulted in a safety (even though his team, the Minnesota Vikings, won the game). He states that Marshall was a Super Bowl champion. I was a Vikings fan growing up and remember them losing 4 Super Bowls (Kansas City, Miami, Pittsburgh, and Oakland) without ever winning the Super Bowl.

Unless I am missing something, Jeffress' statement needs correction.

Comment aside, this is a very good read and will be a helpful resource for future lesson or messages on the topic of heaven. I was given a review copy by Baker Books in exchange for a fair review.
