The seasoned writing of Margaret Brownley reaffirms that research, authenticity, and strong characters create a saga that you don’t want to miss. Once this book is in hand to read, the reader is advised to clear their calendar. This "clean" read combines elements of faith, mystery and romance into a high quality page-turner. This book is pure delight.

Calico Spy is a fast moving, fun mystery set in 1880 Kansas. Katie Madison makes an entertaining undercover investigator—full of wit, gumption and just a bit of clumsiness, which keeps things upbeat. This lighthearted mystery has just enough action to keep the plot exciting without being too much to lose the audience. Overall an enjoyable read for historical fiction fans.

3 for 3- although how this heroine managed to be such a forgetful klutz as a Harvey Girl when she had to memorize conversations word for word as a detective escaped me- still I enjoyed this book. Some parts are a little ridiculous but still maintain the fun. This one finds our detective in literal danger 24/7 but she still feels the need to put herself (sometimes stupidly) in even more danger in order to solve the crime. Because of my love for mysteries (one unnamed one in particular) I did guess some of the clues earlier than I might have and was a little put out that the main characters didn't pick up on the obvious- although they did in time. I also enjoyed the real rigors and at the same time privileges and insights into the lives of the Harvey Girls and who they were. Although the three books share a common thread they can be read in any order as stand alone books- just be sure to read all three.

This is the third book in the Undercover Ladies series and introduces the Pinkerton Detective Katie Madison. She is on her first case that deals with murder. She has apprehended robbers, thieves and other criminals with great success, but never a murderer. She is sent to Calico, Kansas after two women are killed. They work as Harvey Girls as waitresses. Katie is sent in undercover as a waitress. Well, she has no waitressing experience, which makes for some sticky situations for her. Katie begins to see Branch as more than a partner in crime solving, but what kind of future might they have together?

Sheriff Branch Whitman doesnt like Pinkerton agents or their operating methods, but he has no idea that Katie is really an agent. He has tried to solve the two murders on his own, but doesnt have a clue as to the identity of the murderer. He soon learns Katies real identity and they agree to work together to solve the crimes. He has been guarding his heart ever since the unexpected death of his wife in a tornado, but Katie has been able to sneak into his heart.

This story was average for me. It started out slow and took some time to introduce all the characters. The identity of the murderer was predictable. I guess I was looking for a little more tension and suspense in the story. However, I did like how the Harvey Girls banded together to help along the romance of Miss Thatcher. Katie was great in her dealings with young Andy. I also appreciated the faith element in the forefront of Branchs and Katies daily lives, learning to trust the Lord no matter what.

Witty and clever and so much fun to read! Katie is "as stubborn as a sore tooth" and is quite the conundrum for Branch. She has two strikes against her as a detective -- one, she's a woman and two she's a 'Pink' and he's not about to share sleuthing rights with either. Luckily, Katie isn't a pushover and doggedly persists with her investigation. It isn't long before Branch sees the error of his ways and the two join forces. A solid mystery that spirals into much more than they bargained for kept me glued to the page...when I wasn't blinking back tears from laughing so hard. And then there's the bumpy romance that makes the tale all the sweeter. A winning combination that makes this a must read for the romantic comedy aficionado.

Another winning story by Margaret about the Pinkerton detectives and an added bonus of the Harvey girls! I really enjoyed this story, I admire the ladies that were detectives in that period, very unheard of then. I can highly recommend this book as a good read!

Margaret Brownley's Calico Spy is a fun read full of history, mystery and romance. It tells the story of Katie Madison, undercover Pinkerton detective, as she works at the Harvey House Restaurant in Calico, Kansas in the 1880s.

Katie goes undercover as one of the Harvey Girls to discover who killed two waitresses at the famed restaurant. While her detective skills may be top-notch, her waitress skills are not. Until Katie finds the murderer, everyone is suspect, including the widower with an eight-year-old son, Sheriff Branch Whitman. A man who never met a Pink he liked, much less one he was willing to work with to solve a crime.

As they work together to find the murderer, Branch is drawn to protecting the woman who is determined to solve the case, no matter the risk to her own safety.

The story moved along at a steady pace without allowing the accurate historical details to slow it down. If you like to solve mysteries, enjoy fascinating historical details, a light romance and satisfying read with several twists and turns along the way, then Calico Spy is just the book for you.
