In the past, students attending Christian colleges did not have to worry about having their creationist beliefs undermined by the faculty. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. To strengthen parents and young people and help them develop a strong Christian worldview, Dr. Gary Parker has written the second in the Creation Foundation Series, Building Blocks in Life Science.
Dr. Parker divides the book into three sections: "Biological Changes," "Patterns in Structure and Development," and "DNA and the Origin of Life." He further subdivides the units into chapters on genes, natural selection, various aspects of creation and Darwinism, classification, development of life within the embryo, chemical evolution, DNA, and other subjects. Dr. Parker discusses the facts, why evolution cannot explain the evidence, and how creation does. Each chapter concludes with a short worksheet/quiz. The answers to the questions are in the back.
The book is aimed at upper-level high school students and college students. The writing is direct but difficult reading for many who have been away from science classes for a few years. I would not have high school students try this book until they have completed biology.
Dr. Parker writes well. The material is fascinating. I learned more about genetics than I ever expected to know, including why the Jurassic Park-style of cloning could not have happened and why evolutionists are so intent on finding life on Mars. One small problem occurred in Chapter 5, where the numbers used in the text did not coincide with the numbers used in the chart. Having a glossary would also be helpful. Dr. Parker utilizes a number of Scriptures, including Colossians 1:17 and I Peter 3:15.
I recommend Building Blocks in Life Science to all upper-level high school students, college students, and adults interested in the creation/evolution controversy. Debbie W. Wilson, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
Very Blessed MammaAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Great ValueAugust 17, 2011Very Blessed MammaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4My daughter is entering high school this year, and I thought this would be perfect since this was a high school science curriculum.
This is actually a great book, but my daughter is a young 9th grader, and it was a little too difficult for her.
Well, she says it's not too difficult for her, but it was for me! HA Just kidding, well, kinda. lol
I think she could do it, but I think she will get a lot more out of it in a couple of years. Or maybe even next year.
That said, we did do some of it, and I have looked through it, and really like it.
I love that it is a Christian Science curriculum. It is very detailed scientifically, but shows God as the creator of everything.
It actually gives scientific evidence to refute things such as evolution.
It is a great faith builder. Your child will not be lost when asked why they believe in Creation. I love this.
The author, Gary Parker, is a former evolutionist, which I think is awesome, because it is a very powerful testimony.
This book is made up of 3 units and 19 chapters:
Covers in-depth topics such as genes and Genesis, the roll of natural selection, embryonic development, as well as DNA and the magnificent origins of life
Powerfully refutes the evolutionary worldview that life simply evolved by chance over millions of years--Provides exceptional insights and clarity to patterns of order in living things, including the promise of healing and new birth in Christ
Offers a fill-in-the-blank or short answer study page at the end of each chapter so students may test their comprehension
Helps students know how to defend their faith scientifically
Even though we have not fully used and completed this program, from what I have seen, I do recommend this science curriculum, and absolutely plan on using it in the future.
I think it would be best if we did the first book in the series before we do this one. The first book is Building Blocks in Science.
And you can't beat the price!
It is a great value. It is only black and white, but that really wasn't a deterrent with this book. My daughter said she actually preferred it that way.
Another bonus...you don't have to buy a separate teachers guide or answer key. The answers are in the back of the book.
If you have a high school aged child, I say check it out. I think you will really like it.
Anne2 Stars Out Of 5Good, but MarredJuly 15, 2011AnneQuality: 2Value: 2Meets Expectations: 2I had the opportunity to read this book last week. When I opened up the book and read this paragraph, I was intrigued...
"All that changed in 1859. Evolutionists used Darwin's popular new book, Origin of Species, as the basis for both attacking the Bible and reinterpreting the scientific evidence supporting the creationist model. Variability within kind was replaced with change from one species to others; boundaries between kinds with missing links between species; ecological cooperation with competition; common plan with common ancestor; struggle and death as problems to overcome with struggle and death as pathways to progress. Finally, evolutionists made Darwin's "war of nature" a substitute god, an alternate religion, and the authority of God's Word was replaced with the supremacy of human opinion." p.5
I really liked that quote and the first few lessons. Today I was flipping through the book, though and found several statements that concerned me.
"evolutionary theory is worse than worthless as a basis for biological classification." p. 79
"Abortionists often talk about a mother's right over her own body, but the baby inside her (unlike a wart!) is not part of her body." p. 85
There is a lot of great information in this book--I just wish it wasn't marred by the author's tone that seems intent on insulting the opposite viewpoint. What good does that do? The author could have been constructive and simply explained life science from a creationist perspective. It stands on its own. I appreciated how detailed the first few lessons are about genes and the progression of the discussion through the book. I also like the worksheet at the end of each lesson. But, because of the underlying tone in the book, I don't plan on using it as part of our curriculum when my children are in middle school.
My search remains--to find a book that helps me understand science from a creationist perspective, believing in God--that does not insult people who believe differently. It is one thing to say someone is wrong, it is another to be deprecating towards them and insult them.

Tiffany ColeMinnesotaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent! LOVE IT!!!May 13, 2011Tiffany ColeMinnesotaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book is geared toward ninth graders with a foundation of Creationism vs. Evolution. The science in this book glorifies God rather than manmade ideas that are more comfortable for some to live with. The theories of evolution are challenged in this book in a way that students can easily comprehend and understand.
I was very excited to receive, "Building Blocks for Life Science, From Genes and Genesis to Science and Scripture," by Gary Parker a former evolutionist! Even though this book was written for ninth graders, my 4th and 5th graders understood this just fine. I loved how not only God is glorified with the Creation Science, but kids are allowed to see things from an evolutionists point of view as they need to be able to logically converse with people from all walks of life_not just those from their own background.
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the Creation model of Science. This model teaches that we are not accidents of primordial slime, but rather every person is creatively created with purpose, a mission and a unique plan by a loving Creator. That is something worth living for! Our lives are far more exciting that many people I know who believe that they are an accident.
Without giving too much away, my favorite chapter deals with the myth of racism. There is no scientific foundation for racism. From the Bible_we all came from Noah and there is only one race, "The Human Race!" Of course it delves into the science of skin and skin color and combats the idea of racism from the scientific viewpoint as well. I was so excited to have this to teach my children good principles early on_not only due to our beliefs but to cement those beliefs in ways that even the professionals can understand.
I highly encourage you to consider this book as part of your children's education. Homeschoolers will benefit from this, but this would also be a great summer program for parents and grandparents to use with children of the government school system.

Debra BrinkmanYoder, COAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great biology info for high schoolers or olderMay 10, 2011Debra BrinkmanYoder, COAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I am always on the lookout for additional science resources, especially for the upper grades. I was thrilled to get the chance to review Building Blocks in Life Science by Gary Parker, because the plan has been for my oldest to be taking biology 2 after he finishes up Chemistry this month.
I have heard of -- but never actually seen -- his previous book, Building Blocks in Science. It has always sounded interesting, but it just hadn't made my "must have" list.
Hearing he had one coming out that was specifically addressing biology though, I knew I needed it.
I love it. And this book will be required reading for my high school biology students.
Unit 1 (8 chapters) focuses mostly on genetics, which is something I've always loved. One of my very favorite classes at the University of Minnesota was an honors course in genetics. I have really great memories of the research topic my small group was assigned, which had to do with genetic engineering and biological warfare.
But I digress.
The point is, this is an area where I have at least some knowledge, and definitely a lot of interest. And I found this entire section incredibly well-written, and very detailed without being overwhelming. It is definitely at a level meant for high school or older though.
Disclaimer: I received this book for free through the Page Turners program from New Leaf Publishing Group. No other compensation was received. The fact that I received a complimentary product does not guarantee a favorable review.
Lisa KCtrl, FLAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A Dynamic Educational ResourceMay 4, 2011Lisa KCtrl, FLAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Building Blocks in Life Science is a dynamic educational resource that teaches high school level Life Science from a Biblical perspective.
"Introduction to the Creation Foundation Series: War of the Worldviews.
This Creation Foundation Series gives young people ANSWERS -- answers from science and answers from Scripture -- ANSWERS that show how SCIENCE and the BIBLE fit together to give answers we all need for all of life!
According to the evolutionist's worldview, each life form, including each human life, is the result of time, chance and millions of years of struggle and death -- what Darwin called the "war of nature". It must be depressing for students to hear over and over again that they are just products of time and chance caught up in a grim and ceaseless "struggle for survival" that ends for them (and the whole universe!) only when death finally wins.
The bible has a much happier ending: life wins, new life in Christ! According to the biblical creationist's worldview, God created living things with plan and purpose, all working together in harmony. "Darwin's war" is real enough today, but it brought struggle, death, disease, decline, and disaster (Noah's Flood) into the world only after man's sin and selfishness ruined God's perfect creation. Christ's sacrificial love conquered sin and death, and His return brings new life -- rich, abundant, and eternal.
When young people know what they believe and WHY THEY BELIEVE IT, they can stand firm on their own faith, even defend it to scoffers, and encourage all with reasons for hope in Christ and new life in Him (1 Peter 3:15)."
Teachers and students will find clear biological answers proving science and Scripture fit together to honor the Creator. This dynamic educational resource helps young people not only learn science from a biblical perspective, but also helps them know how to defend their faith in the process.
The three units and nineteen chapters:
ââ¬Â¢Covers in-depth topics such as genes and Genesis, the roll of natural selection, embryonic development, as well as DNA and the magnificent origins of life
ââ¬Â¢Powerfully refutes the evolutionary worldview that life simply evolved by chance over millions of years--Provides exceptional insights and clarity to patterns of order in living things, including the promise of healing and new birth in Christ
ââ¬Â¢Offers a fill-in-the-blank or short answer study page at the end of each chapter so students may test their comprehension (Building Inspection Sections)
ââ¬Â¢Helps students know how to defend their faith scientifically
Author Gary Parker is a former evolutionist. He has an Ed.D in biology, and has lectured widely for both the Institute for Creation Research and Answers in Genesis. Currently, Gary continues to lecture, conduct science labs, and field trips for young people.
I'll humble myself and admit that upon picking up this book and looking through it I know I was in over my head! This is an in depth, challenging read covering such topics as: blood types, genetic drift, macro/micro evolution, mutations, and chemical evolution with excellent illustrations and scripture throughout.
I love how Parker takes the very "meat" of biology and evolutionary thinking and blasts the light of the Word of God upon it. This is a fantastic tool to help cement origins of life from a biblical stand by backing up real examples with scripture for any high school student/adult or as a witnessing tool for those unsaved masterminds in your life.
Though lacking in experiments, this book would also be useful read alongside other high school science curriculum especially those from a secular standpoint.
