What if everything you need is already there?
Many Christian churches and related institutions in the United States are struggling or, in some cases, facing imminent crisis, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Attendance is down. Funding is harder to come by. People are no longer drawn to traditional church services and programming in the ways that they once were. Often, we feel broke and powerless to do much about it. We settle for doing more with less: Less money. Fewer people. Fewer churches.
But if we reexamine our perceived limits and our assumptions about how resources are supposed to be used, then something remarkable and beautiful comes into view: we arent broke at all but have enormous resources at our disposal. Church and missional organizations nationwide own billions of dollars of prime property and investment assets, which, when combined with social enterprise and new expressions of mission, can be put to work for innovation and transformation. And these resources are often available to us right now.
This book is an invitation to envision a different way of putting Gods gifts to work in the world. It draws upon a remarkable story of rebirth at a Presbyterian affiliated campus ministry center at the University of Wisconsin, along with profiles of other creative social enterprises, to describe how church property and investment assets can be put to work for innovation, transformation, and financial sustainability. Theologically rooted but practically minded, it provides guidance and tools for church and nonprofit leaders, entrepreneurs, and investors of all kinds who are seeking new ways to fund and participate in Gods work in the world.

Tell us a little about yourself. I am not first and foremost a writer. I am primarily a practitioner. Professionally I have two very full and exciting jobs. One is as the Executive Director of Pres House and Pres House Apartments at the University of Wisconsin, Madison which I write about in the book (preshouse.org). That is a very place-based ministry impacting the lives of thousands of students. The other is as Co-Founder and Lead Builder at RootedGood (rootedgood.org) which is a start-up nonprofit that provides resources to churches and social impact organizations throughout North America with resources and tools to help them move from seed to solution in innovation.
What was your motivation behind this project? If even a few institutions, churches, and people do something differently with their resources as a result of reading this book that will give me immense joy.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? To me the message of "We Aren't Broke" is one of hope, imagination, and promise. Ultimately I hope that readers will understand more deeply that despite decline in some traditional measures of church strength we are not broke. The church owns enormous capital wealth in the form of property and investment assets. Those resources are lent to us by God to do God's work in the world. But often we are not using them to their full potential. Instead of helping multinational corporations grow with our traditional investment strategies, we could be investing our "God-lent" wealth into innovative social enterprise projects that are financially resilient AND fulfill the core mission of the church.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I love islands. My parents are immigrants from northern England and I love spending time in the British Isles. My wife's parents are immigrants from the island of Taiwan which has become one of my favorite places in the world to visit. And my immediate family's favorite place to disconnect and decompress is an island off the tip of Door County in Lake Michigan.
