Rebecca ManeyGastonia, North CarolinaAge: 55-65Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5An Engaging Story!November 10, 2015Rebecca ManeyGastonia, North CarolinaAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Eliza Cantrell steps off a train to meet her intended with a nasty facial wound, arriving earlier in Salt Flats, Kansas than expected. That premature arrival placed Eliza on a train intercepted by vicious outlaws who stole every dollar of her dowry and diminished her chances of contributing to her husband-to-be's store. Even more unexpected was the fact that her fiance Axel Langston, was nowhere to be found. Instead, Eliza meets William Stanton, Axel's business partner in the "Men's Emporium", who also carefully and compassionately stitches up evidence of a painful blow to her cheek.
William Stanton has always dreamed of going to medical school. Instead, William faithfully keeps Axel Langston's store in business while his partner curiously disappears from time to time; furthering his own medical training by reading books and journals while treating the locals with natural remedies, free of charge. Eliza's presence in the store is disquieting, to say the least, but when her future suddenly dissolves and is then mysteriously resurrected, will Eliza's prideful determination to live out her dream of running a successful business, destroy any happiness that she and William might have found together?
"A Bride in Store" is an engaging story involving two characters who continually choose the hardest path to happiness, but who arrive at their destination, nonetheless.
TellNJasmineMontanaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Historical romance and a touch of danger and mystery!January 19, 2015TellNJasmineMontanaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5I was new to Melissa Jagears' books when I started A Bride In Store, I had heard a lot of good things about them and I found that it lived up to it in every way.
I fell in love with with all things historical as a small child and over the years I have become a bit of a stickler, holding historical fiction to a high standard. A Bride In Store lived up to that standard, it wasn't just a sweet little historical but had some very fascinating history in it as well. I had no idea that Five and Dime stores had been around so long and that many of our modern marketing practices date back to the Woolworth 5 stores.
I enjoyed the history but I also became friends with the characters as I spent the hours reading their story. Their highs and lows became my own for awhile and I became quite involved, applauding them and shaking my head by turns.
There is even a dash of danger and intrigue. You'll have to read the book to find out what a train robbery, stolen property, a lonely woman, and a table of broken dishes all have in common.
Melissa Jagears has written engaging characters and interesting situations that pull you right into the story. A Bride In Store is a must read for historical and mail-order-bride fiction fans!

From the back cover: Impatient to meet her intended groom and help him grow his general store, mail-order bride Eliza Cantrell sets out on her travels a week early. But her plan goes sadly awry when her train is held up by robbers who steal her dowry and Axel, her groom-to-be, isnt even in town when she finally arrives.
Axels business partner, William Stanton, has no head for business and would much rather be a doctor. When his friends mail-order bride arrives in town with no money and no groom in sight, he feels responsible and lets her help around the storewhere she quickly proves shes much more adept at business than he ever will be.
The sparks that fly between Will and Eliza as they work together in close quarters are hard to ignore, but Eliza is meant for Axel and a future with the store, while Will is biding his time until he can afford medical school. However, their troubles are far from over when Axel finally returns, and soon both Will and Eliza must decide what theyre willing to sacrifice to chase their dreamsor if God has a new dream in store for them both.
We all have our God given talents it is just that, sometimes, it takes a lot of maneuvering to get us into a place where we can use them. Eliza has to leave everything she knows to move to her future husbands town. On the way she is part of a train robbery and everything she owns is taken from her. When she does get to town he is not there but his business partner is. She has the talent to run the store very well, Will really has the talent to be a doctor. Both Eliza and Will are getting along terrifically until Axel, the intended future husband, comes back home. All of them are going to have to deal with their talents and dreams if they are ever going to move forward with their lives. Ms. Jagears has given us an exciting story filled with fun and unexpected characters. On top of all this there is a romance. Ms. Jagears is an amazing writer and she has given us a work that is just plain enjoyable. Well done.

He is too generous, in some peoples view, with the people he treats medically as many cant afford to pay him. He is also partners in a store with his friend Axel. In a surprise move, Axel has sent away for a mail order bride unbeknownst Will. She arrives earlier than planned and needs a job, so Will lets her work at the store. During their working hours, the two form a friendship. Will knows he feels more than friendship for Eliza, but they seem to have two very separate dreams for their lives that dont coincide with the other persons dreams. Will has always felt doctoring is Gods call on his life. Surely God cant be calling him to give up the only woman he has ever loved to leave town to become a doctor, can He?
Eliza Cantrell has worked in a store since the age of nine. She knows all the ins and outs of storekeeping and how to sell to make a profit. She voices her ideas for change in Wills store almost immediately upon her arrival. Even though she arrives penniless after being robbed on the train into town, she refuses to give up on her dream of running a store. She sees Will being taken advantage of and soon realizes why his store cant make a profit since he gives things away! She cant understand why he wont charge for his medical services or why he creates sales for certain people. However, these same traits that frustrate her also cause her to admire and respect him. She begins to see there is much more to this man than she initially thought. Will she let God give her the strength to throw off her selfishness to see to the needs of someone else or will she hold tightly to her dream once it begins to bloom?
This is a wonderful story of compassion, sacrifice and love. Will Stanton displays Christ to others through his unselfish acts of kindness, compassion and loving others more and before himself. What an example of God in action in the life of this man! The story was a bit slow in some parts and there isnt a lot of action, but the way Will shows his love is remarkable. Eliza learns about being unselfish and doing what is right at a cost to herself, with no gain for herself from Wills actions. I look forward to reading more of this authors works that are hopefully in the same vein as this one.
