Publisher's Description

"I suppose I can’t expect to keep you under lock and key. You’re hardly a criminal.  .  .are you?"
It takes a criminal to catch one, and Nicholas Brentwood is just the man for the job. Reformed in more ways than one, the rough-around-the-edges Brentwood is a member of the Bow Street Runners, London’s early nineteenth-century fledgling police force. There’s none better than Brentwood at catching the felons who ravage the city’s streets, and there’s nothing he loves more than seeing justice served.  Beautiful and beguiling, Miss Emily Payne is not the sort of miscreant Brentwood usually hunts down. When he is assigned as her bodyguard, he vows to protect her from her father’s enemies, who will stop at nothing to carry out their mission fueled by greed and revenge.
All her life, Emily has longed for love, but it remains beyond her grasp. This season she’s determined to find a husband, which is quite the undertaking with a hound-dog guardian like Brentwood watching her every step. If he would just give her some measure of freedom, she is sure she could win the heart of society’s most eligible bachelor.

Emily’s headstrong persistence challenges Nicholas in ways he doesn’t expect but of one thing he’s certain—of all the cunning criminals he’s dealt with in the past, this time he’s met his match.

Author Bio

Michelle Griep’s been writing since she first discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. She seeks to glorify God in all that she writes—except for that graffiti phase she went through as a teenager. She resides in the frozen tundra of Minnesota, where she teaches history and writing classes for a local high school co-op. An Anglophile at heart, she runs away to England every chance she gets, under the guise of research. Really, though, she’s eating excessive amounts of scones while rambling around a castle. Michelle is a member of ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) and MCWG (Minnesota Christian Writers Guild). Keep up with her adventures at her blog "Writer off the Leash" or visit

Editorial Reviews

Terrific fight scenes and tender reunions round out the galloping plot. The inspirational element is light, potentially enlarging the audience for this historical romance.

Michelle Griep pens an exquisite Regency novel that’s set in London 1807, incorporating shades of suspense, mystery, and romance in such an atmospheric story that it gives you the impression that you've just fallen into another era. And much like the misty rain blanketing London, a cloak of intrigue envelops this story, wholly enticing the reader to lose themselves within.

A master at words, author Michelle Griep adeptly molds her prose to bring life to every sentence in an invigorating story that serves up scads of suspense, peril, romance, and faith. I adored the richly-crafted characters such as the extremely perceptive hero Nicholas, and the self-indulgent Emily that has a penchant for hats, and found that these two inspired the most delightful dialogue. Woven throughout and tying this novel together, were the heartening messages on building trust and developing more positive attitudes in spite of circumstances.

I absolutely loved this book! It started out a bit light-hearted and bordering on comical. But the story also had quite a bit of depth to it. There is a strong Christian theme about having faith that God is in control. The characters have a lot to learn in this novel, and it was enjoyable watching them receive their lessons.

Brentwood’s Ward is a very unique story. Giving us a glimpse into the lives of the very first police officers. I had no knowledge of how the police came to be until I read this book. Michelle Griep has captured 1800s London in a way that I have not read before. I could not put this book down! I was on the edge of my seat (quite literally) for a good portion of the time. The depth of emotion is tangible in our leading characters. I believe that almost anyone can relate to the people in this story.

What a good story! I loved the push-pull between Emily and Nicholas right from the start. I was kept on my toes as Emily pushed the boundaries of her protective detail while Nicholas fought to keep her safe and his heart unattached. Full review at my website.

This review was written for Brentwood's Ward - eBook.
Too much lust and sexual innuendo - not what I expect from a Christian bookstore.

I don't give out a lot of five star reviews. Mostly for the reason that I want it to be rare and special. I've read a few reviewers who stated that they give five stars unless there is something seriously wrong with the book. A three star review means good...and mine do. A five star review means I lost a significant amount of sleep, and that I was like a child waiting for recess in getting back to the book.

This book did that for me. Several books lately have taken me a bit of time to really feel "in" the book. That was not the case with this one. I started and simply didn't want to put it down!

The mystery, intrigue, characters, and plot are all simply marvelous! I love the heroine as she has such a hard time with any restraints. I also like the hero and the faith thread he brings to the story. I can't wait to read another novel by Michelle Griep!

If you are a fan of regency novels, this is a book you will probably like.

Nicholas Brentwood is a fabulous character right from the beginning of the story and straight through to the end. I really enjoyed the way he handled Emily Payne at the beginning of the book as he dealt with all of her antics and snobbishness. And I loved watching the way his feelings changed for Emily as the story progressed.

Now, Emily Payne is a character that I flat out did not like at the beginning of the book. She appeared snobbish, selfish, and clueless. But, I learned as I kept reading that there were some reasons behind this behavior of hers and this knowledge helped me to understand her better. She ended up growing a lot through the story and became a very likeable character. She did continue to be a very clueless lady in regards to her safety and she took risks that sometimes were hard to comprehend.

I ended up liking this story very much. It had lots of danger, twists and turns, suspense, and romance. I definitely recommend it to fans of regency fiction.

Brentwoods Ward is by author Michelle Griep who is a brand new author for me and one I discovered that I thoroughly enjoyed reading her work

Emily Payne has no intention of submitting to her fathers wishes that she have a guardian while he is away on an extended business trip. Determined not to give up one ounce of her freedom, Emily sets out to see just how much this guardian of her can take.

After only one day, Nicholas Brentwood begins to realize that this new assignment is going to be a very long three weeks. His ward seems to be able to irritate him at every turn, whether in word or action. But when Nicholas realizes that Emily has gotten into his heart, Nicholas knows that God has but this woman into his life for a reason.

There were several aspects to this book that I adored. First, that fact that Nicholas was a bow street detective. I have read about them in other books and have also done my own research. They were considered mostly to be thugs and thieves so I liked the fact that Nicholas was a detective and had morals and integrity and the fact that Bow Street agency was a prelude to the modern police force.

The faith in God that Nicholas displayed and how he depended on God for everything was a great character attribute. Not many Christian writers write that kind of faith.

Emilys character was also amazing. At the beginning Emily was a rich, spoiled socialite who lived up to her last name, collected to many hats and was determined to marry eligible bachelor Charles Henley. However watching her develope into a young woman who comes to understand who God really is, how much He loves her, and begins to reorganize her lifes priorities.

The only downside to this book was a the attempted assault scene on Emily. While it was not graphic, there was enough description to make me wonder why a Christian book would include it. There really was no reason for it and it could have been written differently with the same effect. If you have a teen likes historical fiction and wants to read it and are a parent I would urge you to read it before you give it to her. Some might think its no big deal while other might take a different view.

Overall it was a marvelous book and I would not hesitate to recommend it, but with the warning mentioned above.
