Using the Gore Lectures from 1977 and the Ferguson Lectures of 1976 as his basis, Professor Martin explores the idea of Christian symbols and "the complicated relationship between Christianity and secularization" in his work The Breaking of the Image. He also concerns himself with liturgy and form and how Christian symbols relate to social change. Based on his cross-disciplinary knowledge of theology, sociology, and history, Martin is able to approach his subject with a broad view and discover points of correspondence and divergence.
