Lynn Cowell is a part of the Proverbs 31 Ministries speaking team, speaking to pre-teens, teens, multi-generational and womens conferences and retreats on a regular basis. Girls often come up to her saying, "How did you know that's what I was going through?" Hearing direction and guidance on critical issues they face, Lynn encourages them to reach their fullest potential by finding the relationship in Christ they were created them for. For the past 18 years, her ministry has helped thousands of girls and their moms:
- Replace loneliness, rejection, and pain with acceptance, affirmation, and approval.
- Make decisions that lead women to reaching their fullest potential, rather than being a victim to emotionally-based decisions.
- Shift faith in Jesus from a parental influence to a personal, growing relationship.
- Develop and stick to boundaries that protect the heart, mind, and body.
- Communicate with guys and other girlfriends in a healthy and positive way.
In addition to speaking on the national level, Lynn reaches many through her writing as an author of three books, blogger, and devotion writer. As a regular contributor for the Proverbs 31 Ministries daily devotions, Encouragement for Today, her devotions reach an audience of over 800,000 subscribers. She has been a regular contributor for The Whatever Girls and The Mom Initiative. Lynn and her husband, Greg, of 30 years, are the parents of three young adults: Zak, Mariah, and Madi. The Cowells reside in North Carolina where they enjoy hiking in the mountains, wearing well-worn sweatshirts and eating anything that combines chocolate and peanut butter.
beckieAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Brave Beauty reviewOctober 18, 2017beckieAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0"Brave Beauty" by Lynn Cowell is a devotional written for middle school aged girls that builds ways to find a confidence in God. The devotional has 100 mini chapters, each one consists of 'salvation forgiveness, faith' section, which is a short essay. It also has a Becoming Brave or a Getting to know You segment which involves the reader to partake in the devotion and then ends with a Courageous Call which is a prayer or letter.
The author is part of the Proverbs 31 Ministries. It is a very well known and popular online ministry for women of all ages. In this book she writes incredibly well at the level and interests of the middle school reading the devotion without ever talking down to them. Each day has a situation that the girl can relate to and an easy way to bring oneself closer to a relationship with God. I received this book from Handlebar Direction for Publishing.
BernCaliforniaAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A discipleship tool...October 6, 2017BernCaliforniaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3As a mother of 3 girls, I am alway on the lookout for books that will remind my girls of truth.
As a Christian, I believe that truth is found in the all sufficient word of God, the Bible. His truth is able to provide all that we need for life and godliness.
With that in mind, I was excited to review, Lynn Cowell's new book, Brave Beauty. I loved the way the book is laid out with little sections covering various topics. Each chapter is in an easy to read conversational style that would appeal to a young girl. Much like a young person would find in a magazine, Lynn has provided the reader with quizzes and questions to consider. In her introduction, she says that she hopes to go on a journey with her reader as they find out: who God says they are; talk through difficult situations; look at people in the Bible and their response; get to know God more; and learn how His words can make us fearless and brave.
Although Lynn definitely has scripture throughout the book, I would have liked to see scripture associated with the topic she was discussing in every section of the book. She refers to God and the family of God very freely so there's no question that this is a Christian book and I appreciate that very much! I also liked how she began the very first chapter with asking the reader if she was adopted into God's family, was she a believer and if not, how to become one. In a similar manner, she ends every section with a prayer, she calls this a "Courageous Call" to God, which I also appreciate.
Lynn's hopes for this book was to be a sort of diary/journal for a young girl that she would use for herself and not share with anyone. However, again, speaking as a mother seeking to shepherd her daughters, I think this book would be a wonderful opportunity to utilize for discipleship and fleshing out what is in hearts of my girls. Rather than simply handing them the book to go through, I would likely read it along with them and answer the questions and situational scenarios together with a Bible on hand.
Vicki WAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Brave Beauty is a great choice!October 1, 2017Vicki WAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Brave Beauty, Finding the Fearless You by Lynn Cowell, published by Zonderkidz.
Zondekidz has once again published a great book for young girls. This book of 100 mini-chapters deals with the issues a pre-teen and young teenage girl faces. Each chapter deals with real issues, like salvation, love, worth, bullying, beauty, family, fear, courage and many more issues.
If you want to consider it a 100 day personal devotional, or moments to share with a family member or friend, you will find example after example of someone who has dealt with each issue addressed. Following the brief story, there are questions to help you find truth in what was just written, followed by a prayer you can pray.
This book is decorated with blooming flowers, on the cover, on the pages, representation of the life of all who read it. It is divided into three sections.
I Am Loved is the first section, with 33 entries on different aspects of being loved - by God, family, friends, and loving yourself.
I Am Brave is section two, with 32 entries on being yourself, being truthful, being scared and being brave.
I Am Confident finishes up with stories about standing up for yourself, for others, building yourself up and knowing God is with you.
If you have a young lady in your life, bless her with this book.

pwnmomAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Perfect devotional for the preteen girl in your life!September 23, 2017pwnmomAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I believe it is a very good book for the preteen age group. I look forward to giving it to my daughter and I believe that she will enjoy using it for a daily devotional. It is attractive/girly... has 100 chapters, but each one can be used for a devotional. Each chapter includes Scripture, thought provoking questions and a guided prayer. Some of the chapters also have an interactive section where the girl is encouraged to write down Scriptures or their answer to the chapter's question.
Seasons of GraceAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A Favorite for UsSeptember 14, 2017Seasons of GraceAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0This lovely little devotional for girls has a ton of appeal. Not does it have that awesome Faithgirlz cover, it also has some pretty awesome devotionals to encourage young girls to find their confidence and identity in Christ. It's interactive, has questions, stories, prayers, and much more. It's about learning to be themselves, but also learning to be like Christ, changing if needed. It's about being courageous, overcoming, and standing up!
The stories were good, and thought provoking. They will draw in the girls and get their attention. They include Scriptures, but there is no Scripture reading suggestion included. That was probably the only thing that I would have liked to see included. I feel like a really good devotional should include some Scripture reading. But this is still a great book, and I am excited to be able to pass it on to my daughter.
I received this book from Handlebar and Thomas Nelson to read. I was not asked to review positively. All opinions are my own.
