Wanda CostinakOntarioAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Hard Truths about Body ImageJune 8, 2012Wanda CostinakOntarioAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5From the description, My Big Bottom Blessing: How Hating My Body Led to Loving My Life by Teasi Cannon looked like a winner for me. I have had issues with my weight over the years and was looking forward to a humorous take on the "blessing" of having a big bottom. It did not take long for me to realize that this book was written on a much deeper level. Cannon shares with readers her deeply personal struggle with self-esteem, abuse suffered as a child, and the unrelenting inner voices of condemnation regarding weight issues. Perhaps ten years ago this book would have been helpful for me, but I am at a stage in life now where I am more comfortable enough in my own skin. At times I found Cannon's personal story a bit too personal and there are things I wish I did not know.
However, this book has great healing potential for those who have deep pain around their body image and self-esteem. Each chapter ends with a chance for personal reflection entitled "What About You?", a "Pep Talk" that gives encouragement in the journey of healing, and a list of Scripture verses to direct the reader to God's thoughts on the subject called "Forward Focus." This book is an excellent resource for a personal or small group study that could have eternal benefits for those who are willing to walk through pain into healing.
While not a book for me, My Big Bottom Blessing is a gift to the many women who struggle when they look in the mirror.
I give this book 4 stars out of 5.
I received this book free from Worthy Publishing. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: Over 65Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5God's love for those who struggle with weightJune 1, 2012bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: Over 65Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Teasi didn't like her body image. When she was young, her schoolmates said hurtful things to her. She would repeat the "sticks & stones" saying, but it still hurt. During a visit to an aunt and uncle, Teasi was violated. She developed low self esteem, having a poor self image.
Then, as an adult, she had a breakthrough that changed her life. She saw something she had never seen before. Like a spiritual light that switched on, she began to see the good things God had for her. He had already provided her with everything she needed for life. Rather than asking Him for more, she asked that He reveal what He already had for her.
She saw Jesus' relationship with the Father in a new light. Then she saw her relationship with the Father in a new light.
This was just the beginning to the healing Teasi helps us see. We see our orphan ways and the steps to daughterhood. She explains how God digs deep, exposing feelings of rejection. We have all been wounded and Teasi helps us heal from unmet needs. And she reminds us what happens when we do not forgive like we have been forgiven.
Teasi wants us to stop believing the lies, assuring us that God's Word will heal our wounds.
She has provided a thoughtful prayer at the end of each chapter as well as penetrating questions with space to write an answer.
What an encouraging book! God loves me, not because I'm a certain size or shape. He made me and He loves me completely.
I've been accused of having DBD (Dutch bottom disease). Could it be that I'm not thin so that I don't find satisfaction in that? Could it be so that I will find my satisfaction and fulfillment in God alone? Could it be so that I will love God's beauty and not my own?
Teasi has given me much to think about.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher for the purpose of this review.
Madeline DrewTucson, AZAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Teasi Cannon speaks to every woman in this book!May 30, 2012Madeline DrewTucson, AZAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My Big Bottom Blessing, by Teasi Cannon, is a book for every woman. Large, small and everyone in between who struggle with low self esteem. Hand in the air over here! At one time or another- perhaps daily- we are not pleased with what we see in the mirror. But you know what? God is. He sees into our hearts and the outer "flaws" don't mean a thing!
Teasi Cannon is so real! She shares moments in her life that scarred her. Made her doubt herself. I cried for her and thought of my own childhood memories that still haunt me. Teasing, bullying and abuse are hard to shake and burrow deeply- only to reemerge later in life. You can heal, with the Lord's assistance. Teasi shows us in her book how she was able to forgive the man that abused her at the tender age of 7. If she can forgive that, then surely I can forgive the hurtful words that I still carry with me from grade school.
Teasi Cannon is also very, very funny! Her grocery store "field trip" had me laughing until I cried! Fresh fruits and veggies are only for the thin, beautiful women (because they won't allow them to rot in a drawer) and the bakery items call her name as she walks by. I have been there, Teasi! So many of us have been there. Thank you for being willing to share your stories.
One BIG thing I learned, and I learned quite a bit from this book, was how to be a Daughter and not have Orphan Ways. It's not exactly what you are thinking, but boy is it important. Orphan Ways are used by people that are jealous and competitive. They need to be needed. They find it very hard to rejoice when others rejoice. They feel afraid and alone.
I have Orphan Ways and use them more than I should. I was ashamed to realize this as I was reading. Just for a minute, though. I immediately went to the Lord and asked Him to help me. My heart was changed. God has big plans for me- and you! Why not rejoice for others? Be happy for others and more than likely they will be happy when your time comes for a bit of sunshine.:)
The Daughter Way is when you serve God and others because you want to- not to impress. You feel secure and loved and this allows you to love with no strings attached. You know you have value and worth. Freeing, isn't it?:)
Each chapter in My Big Bottom Blessing is a devotional and helps you to look deep within yourself. The book is a delight to read! I read it all in one day and would love to give Teasi Cannon a hug for writing this special book that spoke to my heart.
It's not about changing your outer appearance. It's about changing your heart. God is patiently waiting.:)
BreeMichiganAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Such an excellent book!May 29, 2012BreeMichiganAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Before I was presented with the opportunity to read and review "My Big Bottom Blessing: How Hating My Body Led to Loving My Life," by Teasi Cannon, I had never heard of her/it. In fact, I wasn't even sure if I'd accept the offer to review it. But something about the title and book description grabbed my attention, and I decided to give it a go. And, boy and am I happy I did.
This book does a wonderful job at pulling in the reader, with a true and heartfelt story. The author's writing causes the reader really think deeply about the words that she is sharing , the meaning behind them and the way it all ties to God's view of us.
It is so well written. The author takes us through an array of emotions. She tells her story with humor and grace. She's honest and encourages real-life , deep conversations surrounding body image and how to build up your self-esteem. At the end of each chapter, she includes a discussion and application guide. Plus a "Forward Focus" of Scripture.
As a woman, I'm always concerned about the way girls see themselves. With all the junk the media is pushing out, on a daily basis, do they have low self esteem? Do they have a healthy body image?
Teasi Cannon shares some excellent resources and the connection she shares with God is deep and profound. I definitely felt connected to the experiences she shared.
This was such an awesome book, and it hit home in so many ways. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
