I must admit, I was a bit intimidated as I began to read of Bonhoeffer and his life. I knew a bit of his influence, but did not know much of the details, aside from his great influence on Christianity. I was looking forward to reading the book and learning more of this mans heroic character and life.
From the beginning, his faith seemed to be one that was grounded in the word of God and not necessarily, organized religion. He grew up in a family that did not attend church regularly, but his childhood was filled daily Bible reading and hymn singing, all of it led by Frau Bonhoeffer (his mother. Her reverence for the Scriptures was such that she read Bible stories to her children from the actual Bible tex and not from a childrens retelling.
The author takes you through each season of Bonhoeffer's life in a very conversational style, making it easy to read and digest. He uses numerous quotes and various excerpts from correspondence that help to demonstrate Bonhoeffer's character and need to act in opposition to evil.
This book was a swift read and one that was convicting in the face of the freedom we have here in the United States. I would definitely recommend this book!
We should all know the loving, Christian acts of this man who gave his life to service in the name of Jesus. His own country dominated by a madman, Bonhoeffer did all he could to save as many as he could.
This book was a borrow... and then a buy. I could not believe who engrossing this book was. I read it a chapter at a time so that I could digest the intensity of it. I was so very intrigued by the character of this one man. I have heard a lot about him and wanted to really know what kind of human being he was. I was impressed by the detail and research that was put into this masterful account of Bonhoeffer. This period of time is of interest to me and I pray there shall never be another Nazi Germany in our lifetimes. What an eyeopener... what look we get into human evil and human compassion. One of the best books I have ever read. I am so very happy to own this book.
I enjoyed learning about WWII from a unique viewpoint. Reading about Hitler rising to power from a German's point of view in the way he did was chilling. Very thought-provoking. I found it hard to put down. Highly recommend.
