Jerry Bridges sees in the Beatitudes a series of blessings from Jesus, a pattern for humility in action. Starting with poverty in spiritan acknowledgment that in and of ourselves we are incapable of living holy lives pleasing to Godand proceeding through our mourning over personal sin, our hunger and thirst for righteousness, our experience of persecutions large and small, and more, we discover that humility is itself a blessing: At every turn, God is present to us, giving grace to the humble and lifting us up to blessing.

This is a subject that is not preached much in contemporary churches in this day and age but is a must if we are truly going to honor our Great God in our lives and be true to His word the Bible! Jerry Bridges has preached in our pulpit numerous times and, with regard to the subject matter of this book, to put it in contemporary terms, has "been there - done that". At his passing, he will be sorely missed.

Bridges uses this book to emphasize that Jesus taught and exemplified humility as one of the greatest blessings one could attain.
The character trait of humility is the second-most frequently taught trait in the New Testament, second only to love. I regard these two traits as the foundational stones of Christian character. All other characteristics, in one way or another, are built upon love and humility.
The person who is poor in spirit recognizes that his or her best deeds are always mingled with the corruption of ones sinful nature, with impure motives, and with imperfect performance. At the same time, those who genuinely see their spiritual poverty do not wallow in it. Instead, they look to Christ and His Cross for cleansing from their sin.
Bridges delves into the longest recorded sermon from Jesus in the Gospels: The Sermon on the Mount. He believes that each of the Beatitudes addressed in this sermon point us to the lovingly humble lifestyle of Christ. Our guide will be Jesus Himself, who began His longest recorded sermon with a litany of countercultural blessings known to us as the Beatitudes. Taken together, they offer a portrait of humility in action, something which God commands and which God promises to bless.
The book also includes a Discussion Guide to help dive into the Beatitudes and concept of humility even further.

contemplativereflections4 Stars Out Of 5Book Review: The Blessing of HumilityJune 23, 2016contemplativereflectionsQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0In "The Blessing of Humility," Jerry Bridges reminds Christians that we are all called to a life of humility as exhibited by our Lord Jesus during His earthly ministry. Bridges focuses on the Beatitudes as the blueprint to illustrate how true humility can only be practiced through a proper understanding of the gospel itself. In each chapter, the author illustrates how each of these blessings can be experienced by those washed by the blood of Jesus who humbled Himself and died for us on the cross. The material is infused with examples and reflections from Bridge's wide-spanning ministry and his deep love for God's Word. Moreover, I appreciate how Bridges constantly reminds believers that humility is not something that happens overnight or by chance but is a fruit of the Spirit that is the result of the Holy Spirit's transforming power. On the other hand, the author urges believers against falling into spiritual laziness and emphasizes our responsibility in continuously striving for spiritual growth and holiness. Overall, the book is very accessible as Bridges jumps right into the central message of each beatitude and how it can be applied to the Christian life.
I would gladly recommend this book on humility to all Christians. In our society today the call to humility is often drowned out by the dominating messages of selfishness and self-esteem. For Christians however our humble attitude comes from realizing our inadequacy outside of Christ. Bridges hopes for believers to understand that humility is not an option for followers of Christ as we are called to exhibit that same humility every day of our lives. The Beatitudes are not simply encouraging words that Jesus used to comfort those who are oppressed, rejected, and abused in the present of a future state of heavenly bliss. Instead, Bridges argues that these proclamations are present imperatives that Christians need to strive for on the path to learning how to humble ourselves just as Christ did.

Jerry Bridges has been one of my favorite authors for a long time. I enjoy reading any book that is backed up with Scripture and is not preachy about how to live your life. I don't feel condemned or judged, I feel convicted and encourage when I read his books.
The Blessing of Humility is no different. He fills this book with Scripture and gently pushes all of us (including himself) to the cross of Christ and His help, healing, and humility.
Pride is the downfall in our lives far too often. The essence of why we sin is because pride tells us we know better than God. Well, Bridges, challenges us to stop giving in to those sinful tendencies and to lean upon the Lord. He goes through 8 chapters of brilliant chat leading you through the Beatitudes from Matthew and how they apply to true humility.
I need more humility in my life for sure. How about you?

I really needed the message of this book. In fact, Ill be putting it right back onto my to-read list. This isnt something you read once and then youre forever done. Its something to practice daily.
In this book, his last, I believe, Jerry Bridges teaches humility through Jesus words in the Beatitudes. He begins by stressing the importance of humility in the Christian life. Then he teaches us how to practice it step-by-step, one powerful verse at a time.
I appreciated seeing the Beatitudes in this way. I also appreciated the comfort and encouragement Bridges provides. Humility is not an easy trait to integrate. In fact, without Gods Spirits help and the work and example of Jesus Christ, its impossible. It may be impossible to achieve perfectly in this life anyway, but Bridges encourages us to strive for excellence, to confess our failings as we become aware of them, and to keep on trusting in our Lords perfect faithfulness. The book is easy to understand and full of practical truth to apply.
