Publisher's Description

In 2010, Liberty Hill Baptist Church, a historic black church in Cleveland, decided to join the Southern Baptist Convention after eight years of deliberation. Bringing a predominantly black church into a predominantly white convention came with many obstacles and questions that would lead both cultures on a path toward racial reconciliation.

In Black Church, White Convention, pastor Mark Louis Johnson shares his church’s journey to put racial reconciliation into action within the Southern Baptist Convention. He explores eight questions that his church needed to answer on their journey, including what to do with the challenging history of the SBC and the personal painful experiences of church members. Johnson highlights the reality of difficult histories while offering hope and a vision for a reconciled church.

Tell us a little about yourself.  Dr. Mark Louis Johnson Sr. is a pastor, professor, author, and former professional athlete with a passion for evangelism, leadership, and reconciliation. He holds advanced degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry and PHD Candidate from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he serves as Assistant Professor of Evangelism and Pastoral Ministries.

I've pastored/served congregations ranging from 350 to 7,000 members, revitalized communities, and mobilized thousands for mission work. My debut book, Black Church White Convention: A Pastor's Story of Hope, chronicles my journey leading an African American church into the Southern Baptist Convention. I've served as chaplain for professional sports teams and a podcast host, sharing insights on ministry and leadership. Married for 29 years, I am a devoted father of four and a servant leader committed to sharing the love of Christ.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I was motivated to write Black Church White Convention: A Pastor's Story of Hope to share my unique journey of leading an African American church into the Southern Baptist Convention. My aim is to foster dialogue on racial reconciliation, highlight the challenges and triumphs of cultural integration within the church, and inspire hope for unity and transformation in the body of Christ. Through our story, we seek to encourage others to embrace faith-driven leadership and the power of repentance, reconciliation, and restoration.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope to inspire others with our story by showing that racial reconciliation, cultural understanding, and unity are possible through faith-driven leadership. I believe that, despite the challenges, the church can be a place of healing and transformation, where people from diverse backgrounds come together for a shared mission. My message is one of hope that faith, humility, and commitment to the Gospel can break down barriers and create a more inclusive and unified church for future generations.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Writing Black Church White Convention: A Pastor's Story of Hope deeply affected me in ways I hadn't anticipated. I was reminded of the challenges I faced, but also of the incredible moments of growth and reconciliation that followed. The process of writing forced me to confront the complexities of race, culture, and identity within the church, and in doing so, I experienced my own growth. I found healing in sharing my story and realized that my experiences could offer hope and encouragement to others who are navigating similar struggles. This book has strengthened my conviction that the church can be a place of transformation, not just for individuals, but for entire communities, and that God's work of reconciliation is ongoing.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Writing Black Church White Convention: A Pastor's Story of Hope was influenced by leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Pastor Fred Luter, and Dr. John Perkins, whose focus on racial reconciliation and justice shaped my vision.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I would want leaders to know that true reconciliation and unity in the church require intentionality, humility, and a willingness to engage in difficult conversations. It's not just about addressing surface-level issues but confronting the deeper, often painful histories and biases that divide us. Leaders must be committed to the long-term process of healing, which involves listening, learning, and adapting. The church has the potential to be a powerful witness of God's grace and restoration, but it starts with leaders who are willing to lead with integrity, compassion, and a clear vision for a united body of Christ. Additionally, I'd emphasize that the journey of racial reconciliation is not a one-time event but a continuous process that demands patience, prayer, and perseverance.
