BJU English Writing & Grammar, Grade 6

This is a good, all-around packaged English curriculum. This is our fifth year using BJU English; I've got a sixth-grader and a third-grader. I hate to disagree with the previous reviewer, but I didn't find the teacher's instructions difficult or confusing. And if English is your strong point, you really don't need to rely on the teacher's manual for much. However, you DO need to work one-on-one with your kids using this program. This is NOT an independent workbook-oriented program. So if you're having trouble carving out time each day to do that, you probably want to look into another curriculum.

I will say that any time you switch from one curriculum to another, it is going to take some time getting used to it. Sixth grade BJU English is where a lot of the grammar starts to get tricky. So, if you don't want to teach your kids all of the ins and outs of grammar, I suggest finding another grammar program and a separate writing program; there are lots of good choices out there. (If you're inspired, you could easily create your own.) I certainly wouldn't spend this much money on a program if I were only using part of it.

Lastly, CBD has a very good customer service department. When you purchase curriculum, open it up ahead of time and look through it. Skim through the book. If it's not for you, you can return it and get a refund or exchange.

Hope this review helps. Have a blessed day!

I will start out by saying this is NOT my first rodeo. I have been homeschooling & teaching for over 15 years. I have never HATED a curriculum as much as I HATE this one!

The joke is that I chose it this year to SIMPLIFY & COMBINE the two subjects of English & Writing into ONE, & that is a BIG JOKE! I WASTE more TIME trying to figure out WHAT they are doing & how to explain it in a way that is NOT SO CONFUSING as the DIRECTIONS in the books are.

I had very STRONG "A" students now STRUGLING using this curriculum, even though they used other challenging curriculums (like Shurley English), & they excelled once we found our groove in the other curriculums... talented writers, students above their grade levels & along comes THIS curriculum to frustrate us all & bring ON the TEARS!

What a waste of well over $200 (I think it was closer to $230-250 w/tax) buying the 6th grade & 11th grade curriculum. NOT again, NOT again!

I had a friend recommend this (which is WHY I purchased it to begin with) & she said she agreed with me about how confusing this curriculum is (I did NOT know that when she recommended it or I would NOT have purchased it for TWO grade levels), which is why she uses A DIFFERENT grammar curriculum WHILE using this... & that she ONLY uses this for the WRITING.

Another friend also new to BJU & this curriculum also says the same thing. This curriculum is CONFUSING & OVER COMPLICATES grammar/ English!

For starters, it makes SIMPLE concepts RIDICULOUSLY DIFFICULT! What happened to subject, verb, direct object, indirect object, etc IN PLAIN ENGLISH?!

Next, the directions are CONFUSING as all get out because they are INCONSISTENT & make NO SENSE! They make you GUESS as to exactly what they are trying to have you do. In every exercise they will say to underline the subject once & verb twice BUT then they get to the test for "COMPOUND SUBJECT / VERBS" & don't make it CLEAR that for THAT exercise ALL you underline is JUST the COMPOUND subject OR verb, and ONLY IF they are COMPOUND. I get it, it is the "COMPOND SUBJECT / COMPOUND VERB" section, but again the directions are INCONSISTENT since they have you follow different directions for EVERY OTHER EXERCISE up to that point & every one after, except THAT one small section whenever it comes up.

Last, while the writing instructions overall are decent, they could have added a bit MORE DETAIL to that & taken away the fluff & frustration from the English grammar exercises.

My students CRINGE when we do this. I have had to alter the way we use it & can't even use it the way it is written. I have to change the directions which means I have to waste time rewriting them in the student book (if I need to write them in addition to giving them orally for my students) & in the test book so I know exactly what I told them to do instead of the silly directions given by the curriculum author.

I myself CRINGE too when I bring out this book every day, but it is too late to start over at this point, being half way through We kept going because I thought it was ME, or that we just needed to give it more time to get used to a new curriculum. When I talked to other parents using it who all feel the same way, I KNEW it was NOT ME!

All that said, I am going to keep going w/the writing exercises w/this curriculum & go back to a FORMER grammar curriculum at this point. I can't keep putting my kids nor myself through this STRESS & make them HATE English & writing.

Overall this COULD BE a decent curriculum IF it were REWRITTEN to make the English grammar exercises MAKE SENSE & to be CONSISTENT instead of INCONSISTENT as they are NOW!

I like the color graphics & spiral binding. I think that is about it.

I would NOT recommend this & I would NOT purchase this again! This is the ONLY curriculum I have used in all these years I would NOT use again nor recommend as it stands right now.

I've struggled to find a well-rounded Language Arts product for my son. BJU English offers a wide variation in question type and fun topics to learn about while learning grammar. Work pages are thorough without being overly long.

The 6th grade English packet I received came with a trial DVD, where the teacher goes through the lesson with you and they loved it! They had far less questions in this trial period. I will be ordering all their subjects with the DVD kit next fall. My family is so thankful for this wonderful curriculum.
