Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet by Sara Hagerty is the story of a woman whose life expectations went unmet while her heart became re-acquainted with her first Love. God, who comes in the hunger that pain so masterfully produces, worked His way into her insides to write a love-story as universal as the barrenness that every life clothed-in-flesh wears.
A back alley is an unsuspecting place for a brush with God. In the age of fingertip access to pipe dreams and a ceiling-less supply of ambitions, where do you find the God who was birthed in dirt and straw? Sara Hagerty found Him when life stopped working for her. It was after almost a decade of Christian life and ministry when she was introduced to pain and perplexity. God met her and moved her when life broke.
Hagerty weaves in and out (not necessarily sequentially) stories of her conversion and teen years, dating years, infertility, adoption, early years of marriage, husband's business failure, and family health issues. The overall message is that all the tough times end up teaching her major lessons about herself and God.
Sara Hagerty is the author of Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet, a wife to Nate, and a mother of six, including four children adopted from Africa and one toddler whos found his voice amid them all. After almost a decade of Christian life, she was introduced to pain and perplexity and, ultimately, intimacy with Jesus. God met her and moved her when life stopped working for her. His Word and His whisper took on new shape and form to her in the dark. Sara writes regularly about life delays, finding God in the unlikely, motherhood, marriage, and adoption at www.SaraHagertyAuthor.com.

Even though Sara and I did not share the same infertility, I understand how the focus on ministry kept her from really getting close to our creator in ways that should come naturally. As she journeyed through her life and found herself knowing God in the many ways and forms that He exists in our lives, I cried with her. Ive learned the ways that our Father comes in and teaches us, loves us, disciplines us and most importantly raises us up to share our stories with the world around us.
Knowing God in the every day, the hard and the good can be both easy and hard. Finding out how to find joy on the journey of life and finding Gods goodness in every circumstance that surrounds us is vital to surviving and overcoming. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed this book. Not that the writing was bad, in fact it was excellent, but how the story just wrapped itself around my heart. Sara has a way of writing that just envelopes you and paints beautiful pictures of her story in your minds eye. If you havent read it you really should. It is beautiful.
She put into words my desire to know Him more. To fill myself up with His words and allow Him to reach into my very being and change me. Sara is an artist with words.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
BrookeGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Brave Honesty & TransparencyOctober 7, 2014BrookeGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5As someone who has struggled with loss expectations and shattered dreams, I felt like Sara was inside my head as she shared the deep pain and hurt her infertility has brought into her life. It was encouraging and reassuring to read some of her thoughts as some of them are the same thoughts I've struggled with. This book is truly one of the best books I've read on longings that have yet to be met. It's helped me look at my pain in a different light and helped me to see how God has used and is continuing to use it to invite me in closer to Him. Sara's transparency and pure honesty in sharing her story and telling how God continues to shape her is a gift. This book is for anyone who has tasted the bitterness of life and is searching to find some sweetness.

Sara authentically pours out her heart as she shares her story, leaving no facet unturned as she speaks of a God who purposefully uses life to bring us to places where, knowing Him deeper, can be the only true conclusion one can draw. Gods faithfulness is beautifully displayed in Saras desire to see the negative situations in life as launching points for deeper understanding of a God who never leaves us. Reading this book, no one can walk away and feel that, in the most difficult situations in life, you are alone. The things that hurt the most, the things that our hearts dont readily understand, are moments for a God of love to use for moments of sweet surrender in His presence. Saras story can be our own story, hungry for more than this world has to offer. Perspective change offers great opportunity to be filled with a God who longs to be known by His children because He knows each one personally. God made us to worship and in lifes cloudy moments, when worship seems like the last thing to do, hungry and crying out to Him is when God shows up in more marvelous ways than we could ever imagine. Thank you, Sara, for authentically and unashamedly sharing your story; your story is His story and through you, God will be glorified through shaping others stories as well.
