Product Description

The life and revelations of Saint Birgitta (c. 1303-1373), Sweden's "Joan of Arc," a wife, mother and mystic who influenced both spiritual and political spheres of Europe. Birgitta of Sweden was a major personality and one of the most multifaceted saints fo the latter part of the Middle Ages. She was a cousin of the swedish KingMagnus, married at thirteen, and had eight childre before her husband died. Then she transformed her life complete to become "the bride of Christ" and developed naturally mystical nature and intellect into that of an ascetic and an ambassador of Christ. She was both a contemplative and a woman of action. A controversial figure in her day, she founded a new order, sought to reform the dissolute court of Stockholm, admonished knights, priests and bishos calling them to account for their deeds, and entreated three popes, who established themselves in Avignon, to bring the papacy back to Rome.
