Not bad... if you are up for a serious challenge!
August 19, 2016
We've almost completed this entire course, and with some tweaking, it has performed its duty. If your children/students (and you!) are willing to go through this extremely in-depth biology course, it will leave them well prepared to pursue a college-level biology degree. Yes, this curriculum is that exhaustive.
That being said... Even though my children enjoy science and my oldest is considering a career in the biological field, this was a difficult course! Much of the material covered is very advanced, and it took a lot of outside research to fully understand it all. It was also a lot of work on the teacher (aka Me)! The prep work was pretty extensive, plus we spent lots of time doing the labs and having discussions to grasp the material.
In addition to all of that, this turned out to be very expensive! This set plus the microscope and lab materials (and I didn't even buy everything or do every lab) set us back around $800. However, we will go on to use many of the lab materials next year in chemistry.
About 1/3 of the way through the program, I ended up adapting the curriculum to work a bit better for us. We used the section quizzes as daily assignments. I rewrote the chapter tests to be shorter and less redundant. We upped the discussion time. And to make things more interesting and enhance the information they were getting from the (somewhat dry) textbook, I added the Biology 101 DVDs. I also added lots of fun field work, much of it to be taken home and studied during our lab time. This worked much better for us.
If I had to do it over again, I probably wouldn't buy this again. For us, this curriculum didn't really blossom until I shot it with a strong dose of creativity. Considering the cost and work level that this curriculum requires, it was a bit of an overload to constantly adapt it. However, we made it work for us, and I'm not sorry we stuck to it and finished the program. Cheers to a completed year of biology!
