Billy Graham is an important 20th century man, and David Aikman tells the story of His Life and Influence exceptionally well. The standard stories are all included, the bases are all covered. Aikman is certainly appreciative of Graham, but he is willing to be critical. I recommend this book, especially if you want to read just one Graham biography.Aikman is largely sympathetic to Graham but is willing to look at issues with a critical eye as well.

Billy Graham is a name everyone knows, and a man many have written about. David Aikman adds his book Billy Graham His Life and Influence to the list. He writes about important times in Grahams life and recounts impacts he has had on political leaders here in the United States and abroad. He starts with Billy as a country boy and follow him through is world changing life. While there was so much information contained within the pages of this book, most of it was regurgitated from other sources. I was excited to start this book, but it didnt take long until I was dreading having to read another chapter. I could not, at all, stay interested and felt I could have just read the books he was quoting over and over. If I were to recommend this book, the recommendation would also come with the statement that - if you like to read books of regurgitated information, then this one is an easy and informative read.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. I found this biography very informative about a man I knew little about. It is a well written book and includes the good and bad of a man that has been very influential in this country.

Reading this book has really challenged me to think about whether a book is edifying or whether certain information should be in a book. This book is well written, but it is cynical. The first five chapters explain the history of Graham's life up to the crusades in England in the 50s. In this section, it is as if Aikman is putting Graham up on a pedestal. But, from that point on he begins to throw stones at him as he begins to examine Graham's interaction with communist leaders, racism, and with the presidents of our country, the US. He doesn't throw them directly, but he implies conclusions and chooses certain details to include that can feed a feeling of cynicism towards Billy Graham and how he lived his life. Our culture is one that thrives on cynicism right now--the belief that one can see through others to what the truth really is--and this book feeds that feeling by how it is written and the information that is presented. I personally do not know David Aikman so I don't know if he realizes and is aware of how deeply cynicism has pervaded this book. Dick Keyes' points this out in his book Seeing Through Cynicism-- "One reason that cynicism receives little attention is that many people do not even realize that it exists in their own thinking and conversation. Cynical insights, perspectives and critiques are so much a part of modern vocabulary that we get used to them" p. 13. Biographies are supposed to present both the good and bad, the strengths and weaknesses of a person. I agreed with her. If this book were published directly by a secular publisher (and not a Christian publisher owned by a secular publisher), I would understand how and why this book was written this way. But, it has been published by Thomas Nelson. I do hope and expect Christian publishers to publish books that will edify the body of Christ and not tear it down. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this book for review from Thomas Nelson Publishing.

This is a review of the book Billy Graham His Life and Influence by David Aikman. I was looking for a fun read about an influential person in our times. It turned out to be a very dry scientific look at how he influenced the world during his time of ministry. This book spent a lot of time explaining his theology and what brought him to that belief. The book did impress me in the honesty and humility that Billy had, even though it seemed he searched for famous people to talk to. If you are doing research on the man this is the book for you. If you are a casual reader interested in a fun biography, you may not be as interested in reading it.
