Last year we studied in the book of Genesis, so the start of this has been very much a repeat for us. My 8th grader is using A Beka DVD's and so these two want their Bible time to be like his. When I purchased this I did not realize there was a hymn that is focused on for each unit, and thus didn't buy the CD to accompany. The 8th grader has hymn's each day, so I have gone and purchased the CD for this book. We really like the A Beka, but what I REALLY like about the BJU Press in this is that it is pretty well laid out for the teacher with little to no prep. However, I feel the curriculum is a bit pricey, especially the workbooks. You can not easily use the workbook with out the Teacher Edition, so I feel the worktext shouldn't cost so much. My other con to this is that it has taken me an entire unit to figure out how to use it, like what parts are all there. I didn't notice a suggestion to do a review and test at the conclusion of the first unit, but there are review worksheets to reproduce in the TE. You can purchase Tests separately.
I do enjoy the content and stories of this book. Some days are straight Bible stories and other lessons are about the lives of Christians who have gone before us. The Bible stories are paraphrased, so I suggest that my children go back and read the entire Biblical account. I may have them read the story ahead of time so they know the full detail when we cover it together.
We spend about 30 minutes per lesson. Certainly could spend more like 45 min, but to spend much less than 30 might be tough. Bible should be the most important subject and not cut too short. :-)
Pretty good buy.
