C.S. Lewis's fiction is rich with reflections on the afterlife. Martindale discusses the images of Heaven and Hell Lewis uses in his fiction, using them as a complement to a scholarly but accessible discussion on eternity.
Wayne Martindale (PhD, University of California) is professor of English at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, where he regularly teaches classes on C. S. Lewis.

depicts what Heaven and Hell will truly be like by using allegories from C.S. Lewis's books and Bible verses. Readers not only get a powerful and deeper understanding of eternity, but also insightful previews into many of C.S. Lewis's beloved books. Some of the selections from C.S. Lewis books include: The Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Space Trilogy, Surprised by Joy, Miracles, The Weight of Glory, and The Problem of Pain. Beyond the Shadowlands is divided into two main sections: one on Heaven, and one on Hell. Each section describes a number of erroneous beliefs about Heaven and Hell then counters them with truths from the Bible and salient selections from C. S. Lewis's books. The various C.S. Lewis book excerpts and allegories not only provide profound insights into his books and illumine biblical truths, but also provide a clear and vivid understanding of eternity. This book is a must read for everyone, no matter what your religious orientation.

Lewis was a remarkable man who followed hard after God once he recognized him.
Reading this book was an adventure and a love song. A times it was so rich that I had to stop and mull it over. Other times I wanted to sing and dance. It stretched me. This book set me to yearning for that land and a longing to help others to find Narnia ( Heaven) so they can be fully whom they are created to be.
This was a rich rich read, like really good chocolate only so much better. I am going to give it as gifts this Christmas

That describes me very well. This book is part of a series of things helping me to clarify my faith. I haven't read very many of C.S. Lewis' books but, now that I've read this one, I want to read them all!

Scott Sterling5 Stars Out Of 5April 29, 2010Scott SterlingThe one reason I love the books of C. S. Lewis is his allegorical writing about the Christian life. This book is WONDERFUL because it details where in Lewis' writings, he speaks specifically about biblical truths regarding Heaven and Hell. This book is a MUST READ for any fan of C.S. Lewis!
