The Beyond the Code series accompanies the first four books of the Explode the Code series (each sold-separately). This workbook will help students develop comprehension and thinking skills by reading stories that follow the same phonetic structure as Explode the Code, providing kids with a familiar, on-level reading experience. Each chapter begins with word family and vocabulary activities; these are followed by charmingly illustrated stories, and conclude with a set of questions and exercises that give students the opportunity to add their own drawings while developing their understanding of the story and encouraging their reasoning abilities. Instructions are simple and written directly to the student, allowing for independent work.
Beyond the Code Book 3 aligns with Explode the Code Book 3 and addresses the following skills through five stories (Kids Need Pets, What's the Fuss?, Day Care for Dogs, A Fish That Can Fly!, and Kate and the Ten-Speed Bike):
- Spelling patterns
- Sight words
- Vocabulary development
- Following directions
- Critical thinking
- Story recall
- Inferential thinking
- Rhyming words
- Multi-syllabic words
- Matching sentences to pictures

Mary5 Stars Out Of 5So much funMarch 20, 2017MaryQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0My 5yo boy loves these books. His writing and reading has grown so much by just working through the Explode the Code (1-3) and Beyond the Code (1-3) . The stories, pictures and questions are fun and a bit silly. The Beyond the Code books are his favorite school work. He is also encouraged to complete a half-finished picture in each of the stories, and this has greatly helped build his confidence with drawing. He used to hate writing, but now he enjoys writing cards to family and friends!

She loves the stories! She completed Beyond the Code Books 1 and 2 and now she is in Book 3. She also uses the Explode the Code books. All these books have helped her increase her reading and spelling skills. I love that these books don't have the grade level printed on them so they can be used for different grade levels and not be insulting to the student. Also, the stories are good and entertaining for all ages. Even my 11yo ds likes to hear his sister read the stories.
Jamie3 Stars Out Of 5July 17, 2010JamieThis is a very basic program. I think it is fine for early readers (K, 1st and maybe 2nd) and struggling readers but is far too simplistic for 3rd/4th grade.
C. S. Burgess5 Stars Out Of 5September 30, 2009C. S. BurgessI love, love, love Beyond the Code. My 3rd grader struggled with reading and basic phonics but now he is progressing faster than ever and having fun with the books. The stories are great and he will remember them weeks after reading them. We started with Beyond the Code 1 and will continue all the way through book 4.
