The Beyond the Code series accompanies the first four books of the Explode the Code series (each sold-separately). This workbook will help students develop comprehension and thinking skills by reading stories that follow the same phonetic structure as Explode the Code, providing kids with a familiar, on-level reading experience. Each chapter begins with writing and spelling activities that introduce new sight words and teach phonetic patterns; these are followed by charmingly illustrated stories, and conclude with a set of questions and exercises that give students the opportunity to add their own drawings while developing their understanding of the story and encouraging their reasoning abilities. Instructions are simple and written directly to the student, allowing for independent work.
Beyond the Code Book 2 aligns with Explode the Code Book 2 and addresses the following skills through seven stories ( Plum, The Camp Out, Greg Can't Sleep, Max, Good, Bad, or Best?, Stand up for Lemonade, and Lost in the City):
- Spelling patterns
- Sight words
- Vocabulary development
- Following directions
- Critical thinking
- Story recall
- Inferential thinking
- Rhyming words
- Multi-syllabic words
- Matching sentences to pictures

Mamaof4OregonAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Outstanding!December 9, 2011Mamaof4OregonAge: 25-34Gender: femaleI have an older 2nd grader, who will be 8 the whole school year. Reading has been a drag for her until we started the Explode the Code series this year and also supplemented with Beyond the Code. The Beyond the Code series has been an excellent supplement to her Explode the Code books. We started with Beyond the Code 1 at the beginning of the school year and she's already half way through Beyond the Code 2 in Dec., and actually enjoys reading and writing now! Bk 2 has longer stories than Bk 1, but the set up is the same with a preview of new words, practice spelling, rhyming, & reviewing old words before reading the really funny stories. The plan is to finish all 4 books as she finishes them, despite the grade she's in. They're pretty quick books. I wish they were a little bigger, so they'd last longer, but my daughter feels awesome every time she completes a book & looks forward to starting a new one. Kuddos to the Explode the Code Team for a job well done! This series is highly recommended either as a supplement to the Explode the Code bks or just for fun on the side.
