I love discovering new authors and so happy I came across Lynn H. Blackburn. This was a very intricate and detailed suspense novel. I enjoyed it very much and intend to read more from this author. Much like an adrenaline laced episode of Criminal Minds.
*My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book via Net Galley. My opinions are my own.
bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: Over 65Gender: Female3 Stars Out Of 5Weak plot and charactersMarch 10, 2018bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: Over 65Gender: FemaleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3This is definitely a character driven novel. There is much thinking by the characters and I have to admit, I skimmed through much of it. Much of the thinking is about a possible romance between the two main characters. It really took attention away from the plot, I felt.
The plot was complex and on shaky ground. The sheriff dive team finds a torso while on a training session in a lake. The head, hands and feet are missing. Ryan is the lead detective on the case. The sheriff department uses Leigh's dock for their water investigation. Soon there are attacks on Leigh's life. Is it connected to the murder or to Leigh's previous experience of stalking?
The plot just did not work for me. It is based on many "maybes" that seemed far fetched. I had difficulty identifying with the main characters as they did not seem very capable. I don't like it when potential romance interferes with efficient police procedure and that frequently happened here. I also felt the ending was unsatisfactory. The villain was as implausible as the plot. Also, while the decapitation of the underwater body provided a red herring along the way, I felt it was not sufficiently explained.
This is a novel for readers who like lots of thinking about romance and who don't mind it when lead characters are not strong and make unwise decisions. On the plus side, there is a good message of faith included.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Leigh is a nurse practitioner who was being stalked. She moved away and thought she was now safe. But cut brake lines on her car, among other things tells her she isn't safe after all. Is she not even safe working her new job in the emergency room with all kinds of security?
Enter Ryan, a friend from high school, who is now a volunteer underwater investigator. How does what is found under water in a lake close to Leigh's house tie in with what is happening to her, or does it?
I kept trying to figure out who or what was happening but my guesses were way off base. If you like a great suspense novel please give this one a try. You won't be disappointed.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel but was not required to write a review.

How could he let it all happen? He was God. He was in control. He had the power to stop it. Didn't he? She knew he did. So if he did have the power, then why wouldn't he use it on her behalf?
Didn't he care?
She didn't have the answer. Her parents would have said of course he cared. That he was working out everything for her good and his glory. But it certainly didn't feel that way." **
Lynn H. Blackburn's newest novel, "Beneath the Surface," is an intense, can't-put-it-down, keep-you-guessing-until-the-end romantic suspense thriller that will definitely gain her many new fans.
When homicide investigator and dive team member Ryan Parker, along with his partner Gabe Chavez, finds a body -- missing its head, feet and hands -- in Lake Porter, his life is thrown in a flurry of craziness. Seeking the help from childhood friend and secret crush Leigh Weston, a nurse who happens to live near the recovery site, sends his life into even more of a tailspin.
When a second body in a similar condition is found, and when attempts on Leigh's life are made, Ryan and his police buddies must dive deep into what's happening in their quaint little North Carolina town ... and determine if the two dead bodies have anything to do with the incidents against Leigh.
"Beneath the Surface" is a heart-pounding, fast-paced suspense thriller with just enough romance thrown in to delight both the fans of love stories and thrillers. And Blackburn has developed a great core of characters that I'm sure we will see again in future installments of this series. Ryan and Leigh are both strong characters but with very real flaws. Fellow cops Gabe, Anissa and Adam are dedicated yet quirky. And computer genius Sabrina is both funny and delightful.
But Blackburn offers more than just an amazing romantic thriller with a great plot and great characters in "Beneath the Surface." She also offers many great lessons and gems -- how to carry on when God seemingly stops answering your prayers; how struggles can draw us closer to God; God's faithfulness and His promise that he "will never leave you, nor forsake you"; and safety and security are ours as children of God.
And as the title even hints, this story reminds us that there is so much more to what we can see in each of our lives ... beneath the surface.
Fans of Lynette Eason, Patricia Bradley, Terri Blackstock and Sandra Orchard will enjoy "Beneath the Surface." Blackburn was a new author to me, but I'm now a fan and I can't wait for the series' second installment, due out in December.
Five stars out of five.

crtnybcBritish Columbia, CanadaAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Another author to add to my shortlist of christian suspense favorites!March 9, 2018crtnybcBritish Columbia, CanadaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Beneath the Surface is a fast paced, heart thumping beginning to a series that so far looks to be landing squarely on my best of the year shelf, if I had such a thing. ;) Just sayin'. I loved it. Irene Hannon, Lynette Eason and Dani Pettrey have been my favourite authors over all, but especially this genre and they've just been joined by a fourth!
Leigh Weston was adopted from China as a small child and her brother from Bolivia. They were much loved by their parents and a close knit family. Her parents have now both passed on and her brother and his wife live on the other side of the world. That in itself seems like a complicated story that was skimmed over quickly and you're left going hang on, tell me more! Leigh is now living in the house she grew up in and working in the ER at the local hospital after living and working elsewhere for years.
Ryan has been the best friend of Leigh's brother Kirk since they were kids. Even now they keep in touch even though Kirk lives a world away. He volunteers as an underwater investigator with the sheriff's department where he works. When a body is found in the lake right outside Leigh's house they are reunited and when someone targets her life he finds it impossible to walk away.
I always like finding new to me authors who write excellent, clean fiction with Godly themes and values and Lynn Blackburn fits the bill. Well written, wonderful well rounded characters and plenty of action make this a must read!
