Product Description

In Bella's Gift, Rick and Karen Santorum share the inspiring story of life with their special needs youngest child, Isabella Maria. She was born with a rare genetic condition called Trisomy 18. Faced with the bleak statistic that only 10 percent of children with Trisomy 18 are born alive, and 90 percent of those children do not make it to their first birthday, doctors told the family to prepare for Bella's death. Instead, they chose to celebrate her life.

Over the next five miraculous years, the Santorum family adjusted to life with a special needs girl - and watched her transform the lives of everyone around her. In many days of sickness and joy, she became an inspiration to her community and, ultimately, to the nation. In a world that often measures worth according to usefulness, Bella's Gift is a reminder that our real value lies in our capacity to love.

Publisher's Description

Rick and Karen Santorum’s inspiring story of life with Bella, their special-needs youngest child

Four days after Rick and Karen Santorum welcomed their eighth baby into the world they were given the devastating news that their little girl, Bella, was going to die. The full story of life with Bella has never been told until now. This inspiring family memoir explores what it means to embrace and celebrate the life of each person, and find hope, even in the midst of painful challenges.

Bella’s Gift is the story of how the entire family came together to love and care for Bella and how God strengthened them during the storms and blessed their family with grace, peace, and joy.

Searchingly honest, faith filled, and surprisingly joyful, Bella’s Gift is a loving, lived-out testimony to the truth that everyone counts, even "the least of these."

    Bella's Gift Book Review

Bella's Gift tells the amazing story of a beautiful girl who defied the "textbook knowledge" of Trisomy 18. The Santorums tell their journey of faith through the roller coaster ride of Bella's health and illnesses. There were midnight respiratory crises, there were healthcare workers who were uncooperative and unkind, and there was the constant caregiving. There were also the healthcare workers who did understand and love Bella, and who fought for her life and well-being. There were the many friends who fought for them in prayer. And there was the joy that they experienced in knowing and loving Bella for who she is. Interwoven into the story is the political life of the Santorums, and the demands that added to their family's life.

I connected well with the value the Santorums place on life, especially as it concerns those with disabilities. I did find the book a bit tedious, mostly because of all the political involvement. Rick and Karen wrote alternating chapters throughout the book; although this does add interest and tells their different perspectives, it also breaks up the story a bit; I found it somewhat hard to follow.

I would recommend this book to those who have a family member or friends with disabilities, because it may help understand some of the challenges encountered when someone you love is "not normal" by the standards of most people.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booklook Bloggers for the purpose of this review.

Bella's Gift: How One Little Girl Transformed Our Family and Inspired a Nation by Rick Santorum and Karen Santorum with Elizabeth Santorum was a tear-jerker. I have never cried so much while reading a book before. I was also happily shocked by the way they were sharing so much of themselves through this writing. I feel that by sharing the Santorum's were able to embrace the experience completely and give advice to those that may potentially be in the same exact situation in the future. They will know that through pain and the unexpected struggles they can only be more united, a family that will ride it out. If I learned anything it is that love, faith, and peace come to us in both the good and bad moments which can only make us stronger. This book is so much more than just an inspirational story, it is pure love. Box of tissues is a must. I was given a review copy from Booklookbloggers and allopinions are my own.
