Publisher's Description

Start of a Delightful New Series from Historical Romance Author Jen Turano

Miss Permilia Griswold may have been given the opportunity of a debut into New York high society, but no one warned her she wasn't guaranteed to "take." After spending the last six years banished to the wallflower section of the ballroom, she's finally putting her status on the fringes of society to good use by penning anonymous society gossip columns under the pseudonym "Miss Quill."

Mr. Asher Rutherford has managed to maintain his status as a reputable gentleman of society despite opening his own department store. While pretending it's simply a lark to fill his time, he has quite legitimate reasons for needing to make his store the most successful in the country.
When Permilia overhears a threat against the estimable Mr. Rutherford, she's determined to find and warn the man. Disgruntled at a first meeting that goes quite poorly and results in Asher not believing her, she decides to take matters into her own hands, never realizing she'll end up at risk as well.

As Asher and Permilia are forced to work together and spend time away from the spotlight of society, perhaps there's more going on behind the scenes than they ever could have anticipated. . . .

Behind the Scenes by Jen Turano is the first book in the Apart from the Crowd series. Jen has created another laugh-out-loud masterpiece. Miss Permilia Griswold is one of the ladies of the wallflower section. Not having been taken in by high society Permilia listens for tidbits of information that she can use in her Miss Quill society gossip column. Overhearing a murder plot is not what she had in mind and losing her slipper only puts her in more danger. Since, Mr. Asher Rutherford isnt taking her warning seriously she takes it upon herself to watch his back. This book was a delight to read. You get a glimpse of the 1880s high society, with a light touch of romance and suspense. The storyline keeps moving until the very end. I cant wait for the next one!

I received this book from Bethany House publishers in exchange for my honest review.

This wonderful book is filled with an incredible cast of quirky characters! I love both of the main characters especially. Many of the names are so unusual that just saying them out loud put a smile on my face. I have no idea how the author came up with them.

Miss Permilia Griswold has found her own way to make her life more tolerable. She has even found a way to feel that she is contributing to the world. I was extremely amused by her antics. It was very clear from the beginning that she was in a very real sense a fish-out-of-water. As the story progressed more and more information is revealed as to how she was thrust into such an awkward position.

Mr. Asher Rutherford is truly considered one of the highest level of those in high society. He is keeping his own secret that he feels would ruin that standing if it ever got out. I think that his choice of who to have as his closest friend brought me much amusement.

The plot of the story is delightful. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this marvelous story. I was kept guessing about many aspects of the suspected danger Asher was in simply because of the twists the story took.

I received a free copy of this book from the author. I have chosen to write this review to express my personal opinion.

Wallflowers are underestimated. So says Permilia Griswold, who is secretly the writer of the gossip column in one of New York's magazines. She sees everything from behind the scenes, even using disguises from time to time. She's quirky and sweet, and when she uncovers a plot to murder a particularly annoying (and handsome) young man, Permilia decides it is time to step in.

Behind the Scenes was clever and funny. I adored it. It kept me laughing and loving the characters. There is truly nothing like Jen Turano's novels, and I eagerly await each one's publication. Behind the Scenes is no exception.

What can I say about this book? The quirky characters were lovable and show so much wonderful development. The plot was intriguing. There was never a dull moment, and the mystery kept me guessing. The historical details added depth and pulled my interest even more. There were so many reasons I loved this book that I have a hard time choosing one to highlight. Perhaps the wonderfully absurd situations that made me laugh every time? The ridiculous and absurd can be underappreciated as a reason for laughter, but I love it so much!

I highly recommend Behind the Scenes, and I recommend it to fans of historical romance.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Struggled to get through this one

I've read books from this author before and enjoyed them, so I was surprised to find myself struggling to get through this one. It started our really slow, with the first 100 pages of the book all taking place in a few hours time. When we finally got through that first scene, the story started picking up, but I had almost given up on it. The beginning of the book seemed overly wordy, but either it improved, or as the action picked up, I didnt notice it as much. I think if the first 100 pages had been cut to about 25, I'd have really enjoyed this book.

Plot: Permilia Griswold is a wallflower. While this makes her a bit on the outside of society, she's in the ideal position to pick up on gossip and the goings on of high society. The fact that she's been writing a gossip column for the papers is something she'd really prefer to keep hidden. When she overhears an evil plot against Asher Rutherford, she knows she must warn him. However, when he doesn't believe her, Permilia must take action.

Characters: Talk about quirky! The author's created a group of very unique individuals in this series. I enjoy a little bit of that, if it doesn't border on ridiculousness. This story toed the line. I really liked Asher and his best friend. They seemed to be the only 'normal' characters in the story.

Content: This one is pretty G-rated. I didn't find anything objectionable. As far as spiritual content goes, this one was pretty light, so it could be a good one for a variety of readers.

Recommendation: I'd only recommend this book to those who are looking for a light hearted read. It's the first book in the series and I probably won't bother reading the next ones.

    Rating: 2.5/5 stars

I received a copy of this book from Bethany House. This review is my honest opinion.

    By: Jen Turano

My sister really enjoys Jen Turano's books, so I thought I would give the author a chance. I read and reviewed Behind the Scenes because I thought that it sounded like something that would be interesting.

This book tells the story of a young woman who works secretly as a reporter. When she uncovers a scary plot to kill a man in her city, she must convince that man that he is in danger and that he needs her help.

    What I liked:

The story of this book is really different from others that are out there.

The characters in this book are fairly likable and unique.

    What I didn't like:

I thought that this book was really bland. There was not a lot to it.

There were parts of this book that were really boring to me.

Some of this book was a little farfetched.

    My conclusion:

Overall, I wasn't really a fan of this book.

I give Behind the Scenes 3 out of 5 stars.

I received this book free to review from Bethany House. The opinions expressed in this review are my true thoughts and feeling regarding this book. I am disclosing this information in accordance with the Federal Trade Commissions 16 CFR, Part 255.
