Publisher's Description

Start of a Delightful New Series from Historical Romance Author Jen Turano

Miss Permilia Griswold may have been given the opportunity of a debut into New York high society, but no one warned her she wasn't guaranteed to "take." After spending the last six years banished to the wallflower section of the ballroom, she's finally putting her status on the fringes of society to good use by penning anonymous society gossip columns under the pseudonym "Miss Quill."

Mr. Asher Rutherford has managed to maintain his status as a reputable gentleman of society despite opening his own department store. While pretending it's simply a lark to fill his time, he has quite legitimate reasons for needing to make his store the most successful in the country.
When Permilia overhears a threat against the estimable Mr. Rutherford, she's determined to find and warn the man. Disgruntled at a first meeting that goes quite poorly and results in Asher not believing her, she decides to take matters into her own hands, never realizing she'll end up at risk as well.

As Asher and Permilia are forced to work together and spend time away from the spotlight of society, perhaps there's more going on behind the scenes than they ever could have anticipated. . . .

    By: Jen Turano

My sister really enjoys Jen Turano's books, so I thought I would give the author a chance. I read and reviewed Behind the Scenes because I thought that it sounded like something that would be interesting.

This book tells the story of a young woman who works secretly as a reporter. When she uncovers a scary plot to kill a man in her city, she must convince that man that he is in danger and that he needs her help.

    What I liked:

The story of this book is really different from others that are out there.

The characters in this book are fairly likable and unique.

    What I didn't like:

I thought that this book was really bland. There was not a lot to it.

There were parts of this book that were really boring to me.

Some of this book was a little farfetched.

    My conclusion:

Overall, I wasn't really a fan of this book.

I give Behind the Scenes 3 out of 5 stars.

I received this book free to review from Bethany House. The opinions expressed in this review are my true thoughts and feeling regarding this book. I am disclosing this information in accordance with the Federal Trade Commissions 16 CFR, Part 255.

This was such a delightfully refreshing read. I was intrigued with the wallflower aspect of the story since we dont often get to read stories regarding ladies on the fringe of society. With Jen Turanos customary wit, hilarious dialogue, and daring plot lines, this book is sure to please all of her fans.

The characters were so different from any that Ive read in her previous novels. Permilia Griswold is not what one would consider a high society miss. Her charm lies within the fact that she knows shes not ever going to attain a proper lady status, and she doesnt care. I also liked Asher Rutherford immediately. He is different from any of her other heros, but just as charming and endearing. Their courtship follows what Jen is known for and is extremely entertaining. The ending took me by surprise, though! (I wont spoil it for you, dont worry!)

Sprinkled liberally with a message of Gods will and timing, this book is entertaining from beginning to end. I highly recommend it to any of Jens fans, and anyone who enjoys a light-hearted, hilarious historical Christian romance.

(P.S. I cant wait until November for Gertrudes story!)

Behind the Scenes (Apart from the Crowd Book 1) is, in my opinion, Jen Turano's best book yet! And that's saying a lot because I have loved every one of her books. In this book, we meet Miss Permilia Griswold, a member of the "wallflower" section of the ballroom. Nobody knows it, but she's also "Miss Quill", the author of a society gossip column that shares intimate party details only an insider would know. When Permilia overhears a murder plot against the very eligible bachelor, Mr. Asher Rutherford, she tries to warn him, but he doesn't believe her. So what's a girl to do? Take matters into her own hands, of course! That presents its own set of problems and Permilia finds herself in the line of fire, too. There's nothing left to do but for Asher and Permilia to join forces and figure out this mystery before someone loses their life.

This book made me laugh out loud several times. It has a group of interesting characters and elements of mystery, mayhem, faith, love and the comedic scenes that make it a Jen Turano book. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I received a copy of this book from the author and Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

Jen Turano's latest release Behind The Scenes stars an array of interesting characters starting with the main characters: Permilia Griswold and Asher Rutherford. It took me longer to read Behind The Scenes than I thought it would because someone kept borrowing my book. And while that slowed down my reading time, it does speak highly of the book itself. Behind The Scenes is part comedy and part mystery, but it is predominantly a story of falling in love.

I thoroughly enjoyed the banter between Asher and his best friend Harrison Sinclair. "Nails for breakfast"? ;)

As far as character development goes, Asher recognizes and addresses the his own flaws. Permilia is so intent on solving the mystery - while at the same time protecting Asher - that isn't until nearly the end of the book before she see her own mistakes and flaws.

I'm looking forward to book two and getting to know more about Gertrude Cadwalader and Harrison Sinclair. They were delightful secondary characters in Behind The Scenes.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own.

I recently finished reading Behind the Scenes by Jen Turano. This book was extremely fast-paced in the dialogue department. I'm talking banter like you wouldn't believe! Normally, I'm a huge fan of witty back and forth, but I think this was a little over the top. The dialogue most of the time didn't really do anything to drive the story forward, and I found myself skipping over some parts because I was getting tired of reading their constant ribbing. The story had an interesting premise, however, which is why I continued with it. However, I didn't feel like the central conflict made sense, nor did I feel that the villain was intimidating. This is partially because it came completely out of left field with not a whole lot of build up. It felt cheap and underdeveloped.

Permilia's side job as a journalist was underplayed and discarded pretty early on in the story. From the publisher's description, I was under the impression that her status as a journalist/wallflower would hold more bearing for the story. Ultimately, it did not play that big of a role, and was quickly scrapped in favor of focusing on the two main characters "witty" repartee. This near endless stream-of-consciousness-like dialogue probably would not have been such a negative thing for me if I felt that the characters had a real connection.

All in all, I felt there was too much going on in this story to be truly enjoyable. Everything that happened came across as trite and over the top, whether it was story, dialogue, or character dynamic. While I have enjoyed Jen Turano's work in the past, this is not one that will be sticking around on my shelves for long. I received this book from the publisher, but I was in no way required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.
