The Beginner's Bible Book of Prayers by Kelly Pulley can be used as a read-along book for preschool children or as a bedtime prayer book for very young kids. Its pages are very thick, with solid cardboard, so that it can endure the gnawing of a two-year-old, yet its brightly-colored drawings will catch and hold the attention of slightly older youngsters. Each lesson has a specific one word title, such as "Wisdom," "Gratitude," "Listening," or "Sharing," and it is presented in a two-page spread. On the left side is a verse from the Bible and a color picture to interpret that verse. On the right side is a simple three-sentence prayer. For example, the lesson on security discusses the shepherd who sought and found his lost sheep, and the drawing shows the little lamb being located and rescued by the shepherd. Across the page is the short prayer, "Dear God, thank you for watching over me like a good shepherd. I am one of your sheep. If I lose my way, I know you will come and find me." Note that most of the words have just one syllable, which makes it easy for children to read and remember.

The examples cover both Old and New Testament stories, lessons, and parables. The theology is simple, but accurate, and the presentation will appeal to young people. Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
