Product Description

In post-World War II Germany, tensions mount. Berlin, the former capital city, is now in Soviet-controlled territory, but it is still governed in part by the western allies, creating an isolated enclave in a hostile land. Robert Elmer's three-book generational series for kids unfolds against the backdrop of Cold War Berlin. These gripping adventures tell the story three young teens, connected by family, faith, and friendship, as they struggle to hold on to life and each other, while their lives brutally separated by the Berlin Wall.

Time has passed, and life in a divided Germany seems almost normal. But life isn't normal. Neighbors spy on each other, books are forbidden, and sometimes people disappear in the middle of the night-- to the west. When Sabine discovers a forgotten underground bunker, she uses it as a sanctuary to escape her crowded home. Could it provide a way under the wall to freedom? Or is her family in terrible danger? Recommended for ages 8 to 12.

Author/Artist Review

What was your motivation behind this project?  The story fits right into the incredible events of the early 1960s, when the Wall went up and divided Berlin. Hard to believe. At the same time, these were real people, real boys and girls, whose lives were torn apart by what happened. That's what I tried to get across in this story. I wanted to tell a story about a real boy and girl who struggle with real issues like crutches and not being able to see very well. How would they react to the huge events that put their city on the world stage? And what part would their faith play?

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I wrote this series for kids who love fast-paced adventure -- like I do. But there's so much more to it than that. Loyalty, faith, tragedy, courage... When you read these stories you'll discover real people wrestling with real-life faith issues. After all, they're based on real events! So in the bargain you'll learn some history, too, and find how God is faithful through the years, from generation to generation.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I guess you can call these "Christian spy stories for kids," and I grew up on a lot of these kinds of adventures. So it was only natural that I'd eventually write about Berlin -- and life behind the Berlin Wall.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Hang on! These adventures will take you for a ride, and you'll see what it was like to live in a divided city, behind the hated wall that divided all of Germany during the Cold War years. With boy and girl characters from several generations, there's plenty of adventure for everyone.
