The wow-factor of my kids birthday parties?

The visibility of certain muscle groups in my arms, legs, and torso?

The ease and finesse with which I can entertain a party of twelve, self-publish a book, or create deck furniture from wooden palettes?

Are any of these a worthy means of measuring my excellence?

Not according to Cynthia Heald who challenges all of our preconceptions in the Thirtieth Anniversary Edition of Becoming a Woman of Excellence. She examines a biblical concept of excellence like a finely cut gem, turning it to reveal each face and its sparkling qualities:

Discipline of the mind, will, emotions, body, and time.

Discretion, which is defined as saying and doing the right thing in the right way at the right time.

A Gentle and Quiet Spirit: an inner beauty that has nothing to do with appearance and everything to do with security in Gods loving sovereignty.

Purity, a holiness that arises from a life of abiding in Christ.

Wisdom: Hearing the Word of God and also living it in our every day life.

Cynthia draws from the Old Testament book of Ruth and the woman featured in Proverbs 31 (along with many New Testament passages) to highlight the beauty of excellence. (Is it possible that Ruth, Solomons great-great grandmother, left such a legacy in her family that her memory inspired Solomon to write that famous last chapter of Proverbs?) Each chapter is an inspiring collection of Scripture, relevant quotes from a wide range of authors, and probing questions to stimulate deeper thinking.

There is a cost to the pursuit of excellence, and a life lived with conviction involves a level of obedience and surrender that does not come naturally. However, the prize of becoming a woman who fears the LORD and follows Him whole-heartedly is beyond price, and it is a goal well worth pursuing.

Becoming a Woman of Excellence by Cynthia Heald was published 30 years ago, and now has been updated for a 30th year edition with extra commentary from the author after 30 years. It was a short book, a little over 100 pages, but it was packed. I really enjoyed the study and will loan it out to many other girls, as it was thought-provoking. My only complaints about it are the 1) The Bible verse references are printed, but the reader has to go and look up the verses themselves, which requires having a Bible right there. It's not a huge deal, but it made the reading choppier. 2) There isn't a lot of space to write thoughts and answers to questions, but there's just enough space to make it look like the reader is supposed to write in the book. Otherwise, I thought this was a very inspiring book, and I enjoyed it. I didn't have a group to study it with, so I read a chapter a day, if anyone is wondering how much to do when going through it alone. :)

Thank you so much to Tyndale publishers for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own and were not required to be positive, nor was I compensated in anyway aside from receiving the book.

A little while ago Tyndale Publishers sent me a copy of the 30th anniversary addition of Becoming a Woman of Excellence by Cynthia Heald and I must say that this book arrived at the perfect time. We are living in a day and age where there is great heartache and pain in trying to live by the worlds standards. Becoming a Woman of Excellence is not only refreshing, but it is also greatly encouraging. Lovely ladies, we are called to be women of excellence and oh, what joy there is to be found when we pursue the goodness and grace of our Lord. We have a beautiful and high calling to live by God's standards of excellence and when we take that step in faith -that step to becoming a woman of excellence- we are embracing the woman that God desires us to be.

Becoming a Woman of Excellence is for ladies of all ages. We {no matter our age} must actively pursue the Lord Jesus in order to become women of excellence. May this be our hearts desire. There is a lot of Scripture references as well as questions that will cause the reader to think deeply. The book is also full of quotes from people such as: A.W. Tozer, Elisabeth Elliot, C. S. Lewis, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, Dwight L. Moody, Amy Charmichael

I highly recommend Becoming a Woman of Excellence.

When I first received this book in the mail, I can admit that when I realized there was work involved I was not excited. I also was unsure on how I could relate to a Bible Study for Christian Women from 30 years with updates with an elderly woman. I am happy to admit I was wrong. This study was so thought provoking and once I got through the study I really did feel that I had improved my personal relationship with God.

As you go on into the book each thought and question is there to strengthen your relationship with God. I think it is absolutely amazing that Mrs. Heald was able to write each question with such thought and care. I really do recommended it for women of all ages. The book does not come off in a preachy way either. Each answer you give to each question is there for personal interruption. It is a great study tool and I am blessed to have been able to read it.

This book calls for change. For improvement to the woman that you are. As a woman, I don't want to just exist. I want to be the best. And not by this world's standards but by GOD's standards. God's standards of excellence is far greater than anything than I could ever image. It requires me to lay down my personal desires. To die daily to my flesh, which is saying no to what I want and saying yes to what GOD wants. When I choose to become a woman of excellence, I am choosing God's Will, God's purpose, and God's best for me and my life. And that inevitably affects my husband and my children. It teaches my son the type of woman he should want in his life. It teaches my daughter the type of women to strive to be as they mature.
