I was super excited to be able to review this novel; it follows the first installment in Love's Hickory Ridge series, Beyond All Measure. I always love it when an author chooses to follow a set of characters because I feel like the original story doesn't just end on the last page. Beauty For Ashes was no exception, it followed the stories of some of the characters we previously met in Hickory Ridge as well as introducing us to some newcomers.
I enjoyed reading this book so much I read it in less than five days, it would have taken less time but we had a family trip over the weekend! The way Dorothy Love writes makes it really easy for a reader to find themselves in the midst of the story, right there in Hickory Ridge. I fell in love with the story of Carrie and Griff, I can't wait to see where life leads them in Love's next novel. There's also an element of mystery in this book, we never learn the full story of Rosaleen and are left guessing how her story might develop and what twists and turns her path might take. According to a note at the end of this novel, the next installment in the Hickory Ridge series is due out next year_.it's going to be a long wait for those of us so captivated by the tales of fictional small town in Tennessee.

She's a beautiful young widow. He's a Southern gentleman with a thirst for adventure. Both need a place to call home.
After losing her husband in the Civil War, Carrie Daly is scared she will never have the family she longs for. Eligible bachelors are scarce in Hickory Ridge, Tennessee, but Carrie Daly has found love. Not the weak-in-the-knees kind, but something practical. Still, she isn't quite ready to set a wedding date with Nate Chastain.
Griff Rutledge is a former member of Charleston society, but has been estranged from his family for years. He's determined to remain unattached, never settling in one place for too long. But when asked to train a Thoroughbred for an upcoming race in Hickory Ridge, he decides to stay awhile.
Despite objections from the townsfolk, and her fear that true happiness has eluded her, Carrie is drawn to Griff's kindness and charm. It will take a leap of faith for them to open their hearts and claim God's promise to trade beauty for ashes.
I had a hard time getting into this book. The characters were distant and a lot of time flew by in between scenes so I felt like I missed things in their lives that would have helped connect me with the characters.
I did enjoy the ending and loved reading about how God brings their stories together, heals their hearts and helps them find true joy again.
There are happy and sad moments in the book that help move the story along but I would have appreciated more emotion from the characters. They seemed to move quickly from one event to another.
Beauty for Ashes is a story that will capture your heart as you reach the ending.
History, romance, and faith are rolled up into this romance set in post Civil War Tennessee. Carrie is a widow who lives with her brother. When her brother marries a disagreeable woman, she moves from the farm to town to make it on her own. In the midst of all of this, she is undecided on the obvious marriage choice or the stranger who comes to town. This handsome stranger saves her from a runaway buggy, and the romance sprouts. Griff, the stranger, doesn't plan on staying, but between a horse race and his growing interest in Carrie, his plans are delayed.
This book is the second in a series, but as with many books of this genre, it stands on its own. Ms. Love weaves an interesting tale that follows the familiar romance format, and was a joy to read. I read it quite quickly.
Ms. Love creates characters that you can like and dislike. Carrie's sister in law was especially disagreeable. Some characters were fairly typical, but have their purpose in the scope of the story/series.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it for all of you romance addicts or newbies out there....:)
I received this book from Thomas' Nelson's booksneeze.com bloggers program. All opinions are my own.
BeautyFor Ashes tells the story of Carrie Daly and Griff Rutledge.
Carrie is a Civil War widow who must find her own way in the world after her brother Henry gets married. When she finds she cannot remain at home with her brother's new family, she must create a new life for herself in Hickory Ridge. Griff also has demons from his past that he must deal with. As both Carrie and Griff seek to find their place in the world, they are drawn closer to God as well as each other.
Beauty For Ashes is the first novel of Dorothy Love that I have read. It was an enjoyable and easy read. I will look for more of her books in the future!

This is a Christian romance novel that has absolutely no adult content. I'm just absolutely thrilled about this.. This is great for those wanting to read about romance with Christianity tossed in. This is one of those novels you just find impossible to put down. It is really a very good read.
The story is about Carrie Daly who is living with her brother and he gets married to a woman with 2 sons. Your heart goes out to Carrie when you find out what went on in the house after her brother married Mary and her and the 2 boys move in.
Carrie is seeing Nate Chastain, and the whole town thinks they are perfect together. Carrie wants to be sure that Nate is the one God wants for her before setting the date.
When she meets Griff Rutledge, she starts having feelings she thought died with her first husband. So she is now more confused than ever.
