Publisher's Description

You are, and always have been, beautiful.

"Beauty begins. That’s the point of this book. Our understanding of beauty got started somewhere and somehow, and probably due to someone. Now that may have been a good start, but then again it may not have. But regardless of what your past looks like, we want to offer up this word of hope: it’s never too late to make peace with your reflection."

We live in a culture that’s obsessed with beauty. Walk by any magazine stand, turn on a television, or visit the local shopping mall, and you’ll be bombarded with the images and ideals that our culture believes are the epitome of what it means to be beautiful. And if you’re like most women, you’ve probably spent countless hours trying to measure up to this standard of beauty whether you realize it or not.

But if you don’t make peace with your reflection, you’ll end up declaring war on yourself.

That’s where mother-daughter team, Chris Shook and Megan Shook Alpha, want to help. In Beauty Begins, they explore the origins of beauty (which doesn't start with a fashion magazine) and challenge each of us to trade the pressure of perfection for God's perfect love.

Poignant, relevant, and relatable, Beauty Begins is for every woman who wants to reclaim what it means to be truly beautiful.

Do you feel beautiful?

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Others may tell you that you’re beautiful, but do you believe them? Why not? Don’t let another day go by without believing and knowing that you are fearfully and wonderfully made.

It’s time for you to exchange society’s cookie-cutter suggestions for what is beautiful and instead discover and reclaim what true beauty looks like – and the One who created it.

In Beauty Begins, Chris Shook and Megan Shook Alpha share with you their own experiences and struggles with appearance and body image, as well as equip you with the wisdom to distinguish what’s artificial beauty and what’s real. After reading the heartfelt encouragement, insightful challenges, and undeniable truth in Beauty Begins, you’ll never look in the mirror the same way again.

It's time to end the war we are waging against the mirror and start reclaiming our reflections.

Lets cut to the chase. Mirrors are terrifying! Forget spiders, snakes, darkness, heights. Sister they aint got nothin on mirrors. When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Do you feel beautiful? If we listened to the garbage that magazines, television and social media bombard us with, very few women would say yes and might not ever leave the privacy of their own homes. Why are we obsessed with the ideal of beauty? It sickens me that women of all ages, young to old, struggle with the truth of the societys mirrors; thin is beautiful, but anorexia is the new gorgeous, the more bones you can see protruding underneath your skin is hot! Umm grossam I the only one that wants to take these women to the nearest all you can eat buffet?! I mean eat a sandwich already!!!

Ok. So heres the thing, in the spirit of full disclosure, I was one of those girls. The war I had with my body trying to live up to the worlds absurd definition of beauty, was chock full of self-hatred, poor decisions and quite a few casualties. Unfortunately, like many women, I battled with my reflection and tried to change it with anorexia and bulimia. I was more concerned with being beautiful in the eyes of others than realizing how I define my beauty comes from another source, the only one that matters.

Instead of trying to measure up to societys artificial, and may I say, unrealistic, standard of beauty, its time to make peace with your reflection. God created each of us to be unique, special and one of a kind (even identical twins have distinguishing characteristics)! We were fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). God doesnt do accidents. He doesnt make mistakes. He is the most-efficient Creator. It is not by chance that the reflection staring back at you is what it is. In Jeremiah 1:5, God proclaims, I knew you before I formed you in your mothers womb. Before you were born, I set you apart Take a second to digest that. Go ahead, Ill wait. Before you were even a twinkle in your parents eyes, God knew exactly what you would look like and made you beautiful so you were set apart from others. He didnt use copy, cut and paste. He opened a new document and started from scratch.

In their book, Beauty Begins, Chris and Megan Shook Alpha, share their own experiences and struggles with appearance and body image. But they go a step further by equipping you with the wisdom to distinguish whats artificial beauty and whats real. So lets end the war we are waging against the mirror and start reclaiming our reflections.

I can assure you that youll never look in the mirror the same way again without knowing, You are and always have been BEAUTIFUL.

In Beauty Begins: Making Peace with Your Reflection, Chris Shook and Megan Shook Alpha discuss a topic familiar to all women, self-image. They ask the difficult questions: Do you feel beautiful? Also, when you look in the mirror, what do you see?

Chris and Megan begin with The Beautiful Truth, which reminds us that beauty begins with God, who created us. They continue with discussions regarding brokenness in our lives, our daily struggles, and the importance of surrounding ourselves with the right friends. Then they move on to address rebellion against societal views in the areas of fashion and culture. The book then ends with a chapter entitled, A Challenge to Men, written by Kerry Shook and Jordan Alpha, focusing on a message to men who are or will be involved in the life of women as husbands, fathers, sons, etc.

This was a marvelous book. It reminds women that beauty is more than outward appearance. It is the beauty on the inside that matters most. When women make peace with their inside appearance, the outside is not nearly as important. I especially liked the chapter written by the men, who certainly have a major effect on womens self-image.

I would recommend this book to any woman who questions her beauty.
