Beautiful on the Mountain: An Inspiring True Story
October 2, 2014
Inspiring, just like the title says. Leads to self reflection as to what is truly important. Watching someone else look for leading from God, wait even impatiently at times for God and acknowledge God's work in one's life was educational. Glad to have read this book.
Beautiful on the Mountain by Jeannie Light is the true story of this ladys journey to a deeper and closer walk with our Lord God. She is smart, well educated and married well. Living a luxurious life on a plantation in Virginia she suddenly finds her husband expressing his discontent and subsequently 10 years of marriage are over. She has a mountain farm as part of her settlement from the marriage. It is in Graves Mill, a part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She plans to live there with her dog, two horses, chickens, and two cats, eventually developing it into a sheep farm. Visiting the farm and beginning preliminary work for her life there, she is faced with the challenge of where to live while she gets the sheep farm going. She has also had a recent experience with the Lord and has given her life totally over to serve Him, but doesnt know where or what that will entail. Working on the mountain farm she meets Charles, a native mountain man who helps her with some of her hard work. He challenges her with the task of opening the old church, long inactive due a dispute over the color of paint to use in the rooms. So ensues the unfolding of her new life. She is reluctant not feeling equipped to minister, but aware of her recent commitment to serve the Lord, she follows the path that opens before her. She meets many interesting mountain folk, some native, some weekenders, some transplants. The community that develops between them all is indeed the Lords work through the tireless efforts of Jeannie Light. She has challenging days, discouraging days, but the true stories of this mountain community touch your heart as told through her words. Her faith and life is stripped of the worldly trappings that once held it hostage and she learns what it is to minister as Jesus would. A wonderful story of one womans strength and determination to follow her Lord into unknown territory. She works hard and tirelessly serving her small community and taking care of the farm. She grows and matures and learns to love the unlovely; leaving behind the prejudices of a one-time society lady. I enjoyed reading about Miz Light (as the mountain folks called her) and her adventures in faith. I was reminded of how we all need some of that down-to-earth, back to basics theology to keep us humble and able to serve just like our Savior.
Touching story about hitting rock bottom and trusting in God to bring you through. At times the story rambles and takes time to get the point across but overall a good book about listening to God and following his plan for you. Great book for anyone not sure of where life is going or what is in store for you.
I was inspired by how passionate Jeanie was about her walk with God, and she shows it in her story of her life in Graves Mills. However, I was a little bored with the style of writing. I give this book 3 stars.
Beautiful on the Mountain written by Jeannie Light is a heartwarming story about one womans struggles with faith and a second chance. The author shares her pain of her divorce and the stresses of transitioning from high society to the countryside of the Blue Ridge Mountains as well as the bumpy road her faith took during those times. I really liked this book because not only were the characters so realistic and likeable, but the author was so honest in how she dealt with the disappointments that life throws at people. I found it inspiring how the author never gave up on her faith in God even in the midst of the rough times she faced and when she felt insecure about her future. I also enjoyed this book because the author was upfront about how she initially rejected Gods plans for her and how after wrestling with Him, she in the end obeyed His calling for her life and how she has been blessed through that obedience. I always find it amazing how God works in peoples lives and what blessings come when we obey Him whether we want to obey or not. This is a good book to read because it gives us a glimpse of the great things that can happen when we obey God and how our own faith can be strengthened when we walk with Him.
