Publisher's Description

We live in unsettling, challenging times. Everywhere we look, we see giant problems: giant obstacles to sharing faith, giant barriers to peaceful lives, giant strongholds of fear. But what if you knew eight small secrets to unlocking a strength big enough to overcome whatever obstacle life may bring?
Using allegory and a bit of humor, Jesus and the Beanstalk explores a passage in 2 Peter 1 to uncover eight truths that will help you unleash a larger-than-life faith:
· Faith
· Goodness
· Knowledge
· Self-control
· Perseverance
· Godliness
· Affection for others
· Love

In this creative, refreshing perspective on spiritual growth, you will discover an unyielding strength when you tap the power of a God who is stronger than any beanstalk and bigger than your biggest giants.

PRAISE FOR JESUS AND THE BEANSTALK:

"Jesus and the Beanstalk is crafted to touch mind, heart, and soul. It has no lesser goal than to remind all believers that they are giant killers. In an age when there are many new and frightening affronts to people of faith there is no better time to be reminded that giants can be felled by faith and determination."
~ Alton Gansky, Award winning author of over 35 books

"Lori Stanley Roeleveld has given us new spiritual and practical motivation for increasing our ministry effectiveness.  This book is refreshing and relevant to daily life.  Lori weaves creative, practical and powerful possibilities for us, as disciples to live out our faith through sharing Christ in encouraging ways."   ~ Rev. Jim W. Hollis

Lori Stanley Roelevelds latest book, Jesus and the Beanstalk, is a humorous and insightful look at the Christian life, paired with a thought-provoking study of 2 Peter 1. The author doesnt stand over you and preach in this book; she sits beside you and shares stories, leading you almost unknowingly into deeper understanding of Gods Word.

The study is well-designed, too. She begins with a few chapters of introduction, then gets into the work of the study. There are eight weeks of studies, six days per week. Each week focuses on one of the aspects necessary for a deeper relationship with Christ spoken of in 2 Peter 1, with charming stories and interesting questions to guide your study.

This would be an excellent study to work through with a small group or even on your own. I would definitely recommend you check it out!

Many thanks to Abingdon Press and NetGalley for the free copy of this book for review purposes. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my very own!🙂

Roeleveld encourages readers to be giant killers. With Christians facing many challenges in today's society, she reminds us of the faith and determination we need.

Her book is based on 2 Peter 1:1-10. In Part 1 Roeleveld explores effective and fruitful Christian living. In Part 2 she teaches strategic thinking about cultivating attitudes and experiences leading to spiritual growth in a culture opposed to Christ. Part 3 consists of ministudies on the qualities described in 2 Peter 1:1-10.

I like her analogy to the Jack and the Beanstalk story. We are reminded that God frequently uses small people and places. Through them He reveals His glory. We are reminded of other truths too, such as we are nothing without the Vine.

The strength of this book is the third part, the studies on the character qualities Peter says we must exhibit to grow and have a fruitful life (faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, affection, love). Each study is six days long. She includes word studies, Scriptures to look up and questions to answer.

This is a very readable and inspiring book. Roeleveld describes herself as a well-studied lay person. She has crafted studies that are not too scholarly yet are challenging. She uses lots of stories and examples of the qualities so we see how they work. Her questions at the end of each chapter in the first part of the book and in the studies in the last half of the book are good. She has included ideas for using the book in studies of various lengths or as a retreat. She also offers more resources at her website.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

There are books that instantly grab your attention, and this is one such book with the interesting title. What does Jesus have to do with the beanstalk anyway?

In spite of the odd but interesting title, this is not a weird book. The subtitle of the book is "Overcoming Your Giants and Living a Fruitful Life." Even without the subtitle, one would assume the book is about giants.

I found the book a very interesting and helpful book. There were a couple of quotes that impressed me so much that I shared them on Facebook, such as this one:

"In a land of giants, too often we Christians spend so much time contemplating our opponents and weighing the odds, we defeat ourselves. The odds are always in favor of the giant, but odds don't win battles. Ask David." One of my Facebook friends commented a couple of times that the book sounded really good and she needed to read it.

The author has a very engaging style of writing and tied in the story of Jack and the Beanstalk in a very neat way with the giants we face in our lives. Some non-fiction books can be a bit difficult for me to get through, a result of reading so much fiction most likely, but this one was an easy read, and one I had a hard time setting aside.

There is a lot of Biblical and sound advice in the book, and I was helped and encouraged a lot by it. One thing I walked away with that was a new thought to me came as a result of the quote I put above: that we often make our own giants and/or make them bigger than they really are. Great book, and one I highly recommend.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was just a great read! I honestly was not sure what to think about this book when I first heard the title, "Jesus and the Beanstalk." However, once I received the book and began reading, I was completely hooked and found the book to be incredible! Lori discusses and draws parallels from a well-known fairytale, Jack and the Beanstalk, to our own lives and ties it in with Biblical truths from the book of 2 Peter. Each of us has giants in our lives, giants of different kinds, but giants just the same that need to be confronted and defeated. There are 8 truths or characteristics that can help each of us with defeating these giants in our lives. Each of these truths is discussed in depth as far as the Biblical aspect and how God gives these to us, but also how the Jack and the Beanstalk story can be tied in with it helping to further get the point across. I have to say I see that story in a whole new way now! My favorite features of this book is how the chapters are ended with a "small steps toward slaying giants" section and also a "one stone for your sling" inspiring quote.
