I will forever sing the praises of Mounce, Basics of Biblical Greek. When I was in college I took Greek twice, under two different professors, with two different textbooks. One professor used David Allen Black, Learn to Read New Testament Greek. The other professor used Ray Summers, Essentials of New Testament Greek. I failed both courses.

I graduated from college and went to seminary thinking I would never learn Greek. Then, in my first semester of seminary, I took a first semester Greek course in which the professor used Mounce, Basics of Biblical Greek, second edition. Suddenly a whole new world opened up for me because I was finally learning and understanding Greek. I did not just pass the course. I learned how to read the Greek language, even though I never thought it was possible.

If you are looking for a source that will set you on the path to reading New Testament Greek, then, get Mounce. Mounce is easy to understand. He does not throw information at you that you are not ready for. What I like most of all is that his examples in the textbook and the exercises in the workbook are Scripture. He gets you into the Greek text right away. Like a day at the beach, he introduces you to the beach, shows you the sand and the shoreline. Then he encourages you to wade out into the water. But he never takes you out so far that you feel like he is drowning you.

So take it from a guy who thought he just was not smart enough to learn Greek. Get Basics of Biblical Greek. You will not be disappointed.

I'm able to learn at my own pace which is wonderful since learning takes longer than it once did. Dr. Mounce is a gifted teacher; it's a privilege to learn Greek with him.

Bill Mounce's book is great along with the suite of study tools that are available to go along with the text book. His online classes are also a great help. However, as one other reviewer notes: the typographical errors in the book at this late stage of printing is inexcusable from a firm like Zondervan (I thought would be no big deal--but in fact it is)! Also inexcusable is that Zondervan has not issued an erratum on their website that would coincide with the book.

My thought is that Bill Mounce obviously being the detail oriented person that he obviously is should demand better from the publisher! As a student, I would appreciate a list of typographical errors notated so that I might print them out to ride along with the book, as that would eliminate some of the inconvenient struggles that these errors lead to.

It appears the publisher would rather just take the money and run, rather than putting out a quality accurate final product. It appears that quality and accuracy is not a priority in Zondervan's business model.
