Product Description

An enlightening introduction to the common presence of human trafficking

In recent years, Americans have woken up to the reality that human trafficking is not just something that happens in other countries. But what most still do not understand is that neither is it something that just happens to "other people" such as runaways or the disenfranchised. The human trafficker is no respecter of faith, education, or socioeconomic status, and even kids who are raised in solid families in middle and upper class suburbs can fall victim. Likewise, labor trafficking happens in our cities, neighborhoods, and rural areas.

Through true stories and years of boots-on-the-ground experience, including at the Super Bowl, anti-trafficking expert Nita Belles teaches readers everything they need to know about human trafficking in the United States and what they can do to join the fight against it. In Our Backyard helps concerned parents, friends, teachers, law enforcement, government officials, and other leaders understand all forms of trafficking, identify risk factors, and take practical steps to keep their loved ones and neighbors safe from predators.

We have a tendency to think that slavery can't happen here. Not to us. However, human trafficking does happen here, and it even takes place in our own backyard. This book describes what human trafficking looks like and how we can participate in putting an end to it, saving many lives in the process. Our silence only hurts the victims, but speaking out will hurt their captors.

What an eye opener this book proved to be. I knew that such things happened, but not to what extent. This book not only presents the facts about human trafficking but shows ways that we can prevent it from happening to us and to those we know and love. It is disheartening to learn more about the dark side of humanity, but this book shows that there is hope as well. I have been made more aware of what human trafficking looks like, and the stories inside have given me greater compassion for those who are suffering. I think that In Our Backyard should be mandatory reading for everyone.

I received this book from Baker Books in exchange for my review.

I recently finished reading In Our Backyard by Nita Belles. Holy Moly. This book is revolutionary. It is my belief that if every person in the world was required to read this book, human trafficking would be a thing of the past. It has certainly opened my eyes to an issue that, as a strong Christian, I thought I was well educated on. I could not have been more wrong. This book covers everything from sex and labor slaves and their perpetrators to pornography and modern media. Your eyes will be opened to the atrocities that are occurring even in small towns right here in the United States. Not only will you be made aware of these horrible situations, you will also be better equipped on how to positively bring change and healing to the victims. Not only that, but you will learn how to identify red flags and how to prevent trafficking. My final thoughts are this: Read this book and let your life be changed. I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

The book, In Our Backyard, is a book documenting the horrors of the human and sex trafficking that occurs both in America and across the globe. This book sickened me. Reading the horrifying stories of the young men and women who are trapped in the sex industry made me realize that I am sadly unaware of the tragedies that surround me. Nita Belles does an excellent job of showing her readers how they themselves are accidentally or intentionally contributing to this monstrosity and how they can takes steps to stop. The statistics she gives in her book about the number of people who are currently involved in modern-day slavery is staggering. This cannot continue and must be stopped. I think everybody should read this as it contain such important information. We must take a stand against the evil that is modern-day slavery. *Warning: Tears were shed reading this book. *
