Back in the Saddle #1, in the Double S Ranch series, by Ruth Logan Herne
Family and fortunes collide in this tale of a prodigal son’s return. Colt Stafford had left the West for Wall Street. When the stock market fails him, Colt comes home to his roots, where he’s unexpectedly greeted by a gun-toting woman named Angelina, an angry younger brother – Nick – and a town that resents the Stafford’s presence. Will Colt settle down and help mend the fences…or will he make tracks once again for Wall Street?

Trixi5 Stars Out Of 5Engaging from the start!November 8, 2016TrixiQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Colt Stafford's home! Not by choice, but by circumstances beyond his control. He's got a lot of fences to mend and head-clearing to do, but it's nothing a bit of hard work & determination can't fix! Toss in a fiercely devoted, stubborn & feisty lady house manager with secrets of her own, two precarious nieces vying for his attention, a disgruntled younger brother, a sickly father full of lifetime regrets to make up for and a whole herd of cattle in birthing season to tend to and you got yourself the makings of a hot mess! One thing God is trying to remind Colt of, His timing is eternal and perfect--whether this cowboy turned Wall Street financial wizard can see it or not!
The Stafford family is like any other you'd find today, imperfect people living imperfect lives. Too many regrets and heartache and a lot of love to give! Sam Stafford; father, rancher, stubborn as the day is long, wants to make amends with his sons. Is it too late or will Colt accept the changes he sees? If it's one thing God can do perfectly, is the business of reconciliation, redemption and second chances. I loved seeing hearts change in this story, how God took the hard ground and watered it with His love and made things new again! A deeply rich emotional story that will entangle you from the start, full of characters you can relate to and spiritual lessons to learn. This reminded me of the Prodigal son story in that no matter how far away we are, God will seek us out and bring us home again!
I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment of the Double S Ranch; "Home on the Range" Nick Stafford's story!

I finally got around to reading it and it is just such a good book. Ruth Logan Herne is a really good Christian Fiction author, creating characters that are very lively, settings that are believable and wonderful wealths of emotions. I enjoyed this one thoroughly.
God sometimes uses circumstances that we don't understand nor like to bring about His perfect plan for our lives, to give us the happiness we long for and healing for our hearts. There's much to learn here as well as an enjoyable book to read. AND the sequel comes out Tuesday!!!

I've always liked cowboys.
Movies about cowboys. Books about cowboys. Cowboys tipping their hats to me (in person!).
Back in the Saddle by Ruth Logan Herne was a great cowboy story that incorporated several great themes. There was the prodigal son angle, and I was surprised to see a fresh look at it. This plot can quickly become tired and overused, but I felt that Ruth really kept me on my toes with it, bringing me back into acquaintance with this storyline in a sweet way that touched my heart anew.
Another theme in this book was single parents trying their best with what they've got. How true-to-life! I know several single parents, and this book reminded me of them and their daily struggles. Very well written on this front, for sure.
Redemption is always a wonderful theme to weave into Christian fiction novels, and Ruth handled this with such grace. It's slipped into the small scenes, yet in very significant ways: playing cars with a little boy, eating cake at the kitchen counter, and teaching young girls to ride horses.
Can you find those scenes in Back in the Saddle? Better yet, can you discover the redemption and grace offered in those scenes?

Booklover105 Stars Out Of 5Great new series from an author I haven't read beforeMay 14, 2016Booklover10Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I am always thrilled when I find a new author that I thoroughly enjoy. It has been a while since I've read a new author and I haven't been able to stop thinking about this book. My 7-year-old son wanted to hold this book because of the cover. He wanted to read it because he was convinced it was a cowboy book. I had to convince him it was not a book about cowboys!
The setting of this book was absolutely beautiful to imagine. I could easily see it in my head. Angelina was one of my favorites. She is always speaking her mind and isn't afraid to live wholeheartedly. She had me laughing in certain parts. Colt is just a sweetheart. He gives up a lot to come home to his roots when his father needs him most. Even though he takes his duty to his father seriously, things aren't all perfect at home. He still has some issues that need to be worked out with his father. He still has hurt feelings and can't keep sweeping it under the rug.
This story focuses on Colt, but his two other brothers are primed and ready for a story all of their own. I really hope the other books in the series will focus on the other brothers. However, I hope that they will continue to update readers on Colt and Angelina.
And the best news for readers of this series? You don't have to wait long for the next book!
I received this book free from Waterbrook Multnomah Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion of this book.
bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: 55-65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A nice romanceMay 4, 2016bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4My favorite part of this book is its location Washington State. What a treat to read a novel mentioning towns I've visited many times.
The location is in eastern Washington, near the Cascade Mountains. The Staffords have a huge cattle ranch there. Sam Stafford is ill and his sons reconnect as they rally around him. Colt is the oldest and returns from New York. Once a successful fund manager, he's back home to recover from his financial disasters. Nick is already at the farm, having kept it going while the other brothers left. The youngest, an adopted brother and successful western singing star, even makes an appearance.
This is a novel about relationships. Sam's wife died while the boys were young and he did not do the best job of being a father. In poor health, he has found peace with God in his saving faith in Jesus. But it will take lots of forgiveness from his sons before he'll have peace with his boys.
A mystery character is Angelina, the ranch cook and housekeeper. We find out she is an ex-detective with the Seattle police. She's keeping herself and young son out of sight. There is a story that needs to be told there.
A romance blossoms between Colt and Angelina but there is a great deal of relationship work that needs to happen first. Then a disaster hits the town and the future is dark unless Colt can pull his family together.
This is a nice novel about people coming to understand what is really important in life. I recommend it to readers who enjoy stories of life transformation, character development and romance.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
