Publisher's Description

Don’t waste your awkwardness.

The most difficult subjects in our lives are also the ones that we find most uncomfortable to talk about: divorce, body image, sexuality, pornography, or depression. Our awkward silence reveals the gap that exists between what we are and what we know we should be. But God loves those awkward moments, Sammy Rhodes argues, because they are precisely where we find connection with God and one another.

In This Is Awkward, Rhodes talks directly, honestly, hilariously about the most painfully uncomfortable subjects in our lives. In chapters like "Parents Are a Gift (You Can’t Return Them)" and "The Porn in My Side," he boldly goes where most of us fear to tread, revealing that we can be liberated by the embrace of a God who knows the most shameful things about us and loves us all the same. Because nothing is too awkward for God.

Perhaps it is a good thing (or, maybe not) that I have never heard of Sammy Rhodes and his @prodigalsam twitter troubles before reading his book This Is Awkward. I think it was a good thing.

Last week, I started and finished reading his book.

    Impressions:

Honest. Because the whole idea behind the book is to show How Lifes Uncomfortable Moments Open the Door to Intimacy and Connection, Sammy doesnt hide behind a veil when it comes to rough points of his life.

Funny. While his twitter adventure was a disaster, he is actually funny (even if in a slightly self-deprecating manner at times). I laughed out loud when he described his wedding his wife really does love him if she actually got married to that offspring of a hot dog and a raccoon 😀

Deep. I have highlighted quite a few quotes. While he doesnt get deep into theology, he says things that are somewhat so obvious that we forget about them altogether.

Easy to read. His main writing experience is writing for his blog and it shows. Like I said, I got through the book quite quickly (and my reading time is limited to 22-minute-long metro rides to and from work.)

Theres a lot for introverts. Even a guide to survival at a party :)

Bottomline: I enjoyed it. Granted, I would take away some of the details hed share in the beginning of each part, but some of those were good too.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I was first made aware of Sammy Rhodes several years back when one of my best friends mentioned he was following this really funny guy on Twitter. We soon came to find out that he was not only really funny, but he was also a Christian. We both followed him on Twitter and would go back and forth with our favorite jokes. It was interesting to see everything go down on Twitter against him, and his public shaming. I wondered how he was going to respond to it, and I finally noticed he just disappeared. I thought he had done the wisest thing instead of continue on battling on in the social media world. I never thought I would see him reemerge and then eventually come out with a book. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to receive an advanced copy of the book. After I finished the book in less than 24 hours, I was left with mixed feelings. Sammy Rhodes is extremely funny, and I literally laughed out loud at his Aquaman joke. He also has some wonder observations and lessons for the Christian life. However, I don't know how I like them mixed together. It is most likely a personal opinion, but I would have liked for him to been either one or the other but both to me was too much.
