The title certainly got my attention. In his book, Ralph Reed pulls no punches in explaining how events throughout American history have defined the times we live in today. Awakening is divided into 3 parts: 1. In Motion, 2. Off Course, 3. Awakening. Within each of these parts are the fifteen chapters comprising this book.
As someone who enjoys American politics and is concerned about the direction our country has turned, I was quite interested in reading this book. We must understand the history behind not only American policy, but spiritual cycles to really get why we are where we are. One thing that I found promising was that Reed explains that within political systems, there are spiritual cycles. Human societies tend to move from faith to prosperity to pride to destruction, and then regeneration. I have hope for the regeneration of spirituality in our country. He explains that when things are at their worst, there is a repentance leading back to faith. Oh, how I long for that time.
There is so much in this book that I can't list all of the things I learned. What I can say is that I appreciate Reed's perspective, given his political perspective and Christian background. He uses scripture and Biblical history as well. At the end of each chapter, Reed has included Action Points. These Action Points could be used while reading this book by yourself, but also lend themselves to discussion with a group.
Chapter 15 is titled "A Call To Christian Citizenship." Reed says, "As people of faith, we exercise our temporal citizenship not to gain power but to witness to a higher authority. Properly understood, our citizenship is a gift from God, and we utilize it to glorify Him by defending the defenseless, giving voice to the voiceless, and asserting that our rights come from God, not any king, president, court or congress."
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I am not obligated to give this book a positive review, although I did enjoy reading it and found it quite interesting. I recommend this book to anyone concerned about the state of our country (I don't know anyone who isn't concerned). Go buy it!

From the back cover: Can America be saved_or is it too late?
In Awakening, Reed provides practical steps and a bold plan that will restore America to greatness. Find out how you can be part of the awakening that will re-energize Americans to effective citizenship and renew our core values of faith, personal responsibility, and liberty. Such an awakening can happen todayââ¬âand it begins with us.
There are signs that make it look as though it is all over for America. It happened to Rome, it happened to The Dutch, why should America be any different? In three parts Ralph Reed shows us why it is still possible to turn America's decline around. Part One: In Motion, Part Two: Off Course and Part Three: Awakening. At the end of each chapter there are Action Points that will help fully deal with all that was learned in the chapter. If you are an American and believe that America can be great once again then this is the book for you.

The first sentence in the first chapter asks the question "Are we watching our nation commit suicide?" I myself know that every day I think things can't get any worse and then I watch the news and find that yes indeed things certainly can and are. The United States is living in a time of moral, social, and economic decline. Violence seems to be the normal, and foul language is something that is heard almost everywhere I go. Thing is there is hope, because God doesn't forsake the faithful, so it is never to late. While Awakening points out much of what is ailing our country, he also provides the spiritual path for healing it as well. An easy to read book broken down into three parts, and fifteen chapters that are very user friendly. Written in terms that anyone can understand, each chapter touches on a different topic, such as the spiritual cycle, the life of marriage, and the importance of strengthening the family. At the end of each chapter there are action points that might steer the reader toward scripture, or share some other bit of wisdom that pertains to the chapter read. I will say that the chapter that really spoke to me had to be the last one titled "A Call To Christian Citizenship" which really motivates the reader into action reminding that the movement toward renewal starts with each of us. A book that certainly provides fuel for thought. God will Bless America again if we find our way back to him, and Awakening will certainly help point it's readers in the right direction. Such a timely read that would be perfect for group study and discussion!

The first question that is asked, is "Are we watching our nation commit suicide?" "Is America, like a crumbling modern-day Roman Empire, doomed to inevitable decline and demise?" Hard questions straight off the bat in the first chapter. Mr. Ralph Reed takes you through what is going on in America today.
At the end of chapter, there are action points, some might be scripture, or reading the Bill of Rights, or writing the editor of your local paper. The action points go along with the chapter that you just read.
I really like this book. I am glad the author brought the language of the book down to the everyday American. Not everyone has been to college. Not everyone knows political terms. So, it was really nice to be able to read a book like Awakening and be able to understand it. I really like the action points. It makes me, the reader want to do more, know more about what is going on. Why we should be believing a certain way, or why we should be thinking a different way. The author uses the action points to get us to understand the needs of America. What America has gone through and where we are headed.

Through the downward spiral of this country economically, spiritually and morally, the author, Ralph Reed, shares his thoughts reversing the decline. By way of ideas based on returning to the country led by the Founding Fathers, Reed explains why and how such things as marriage, worship, spiritual awakening and government can make a difference. With his vast experience as chairman of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, senior advisor to the Bush-Cheney campaigns as well as chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, Ralph Reed believes this country still has a chance.
A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Ralph Reed has some thought-provoking ideas on steering this country back to moral, economical and spiritual empowerment. He demonstrates a way in which we can be "part" of this world yet not necessarily "of" this world. With endorsements from Senator Rand Paul, Senator Marco Rubio and Governor Mike Huckabee, there appear to be many who support his ideas. Though not fundamentally new beliefs and conclusions, Ralph Reed imposes his thoughts in a different way.
