Publisher's Description

Trying to heal the ache she feels in her empty life, wealthy Christine Pendleton decides to volunteer at Centre Street Chapel. Ministering to one of the most deprived parts of New York City, the chapel aims at making a difference in the lives of the impoverished immigrants flooding the city. After seeing firsthand the hopelessness of the poor women and orphans, Christine is convinced more can be done to help them.

Guy Bedell has been serving at the chapel and pouring his heart out for the people he's grown to care about. When Christine begins to challenge his methods and offers a new vision for reaching out to the community, can he trust that perhaps God has bigger plans in store for him--plans that may include this feisty socialite?

The characters are truly three dimensional in this remarkable beginning of a new series. I love it when a new group of books is introduced in a novella such as this.

This wonderful story is set in New York City in 1857. I have read books from this period about the wealthy and those in high society. I have seldom found a book that is focused on the plight of the poorest of immigrants. The picture drawn of how they are trapped within their circumstances without any foreseeable way out is very poignant. My heart broke for what Elise and her sisters were facing.

At the same time Christine Pendleton and Reverend Guy Bedell were doing what they could to try and help. I was quickly able to empathize with Christine and the heartache she has experienced as well. I was caught up in longing to see her life improve as well.

I am looking forward to reading this entire series.

This is a free novella published to point the reader to Jody Hedlund's novel "With You Always." It's a promotional book, a tease to buy the novel. It's good to understand that before reading, so the reader isn't disappointed by the ending. It doesn't end so much as it just stops. The reader can assume that the story will pick up again in the novel.

This story is an eye-opening look into the tenements of New York during the mid-1800s. The poverty, the squalor, the desperation, and degradation. A stark look into a time of change and growth for a country absorbing more people than it would handle. But God placed people in the midst who cared and who worked to make a difference.

Worth reading, whether you continue on to read the novel or not.

This free ebook novella was such a nice way to introduce the Orphan Train series. The plot and characters were very nicely developed and I easily connected with them. There are actually two storylines going on in this book and both are very good. An Awakened Heart follows the story of a man and woman who are working to reach out to the destitute in their city, but it also introduces the reader to a poor immigrant family who is struggling to survive. It is a very moving tale and really sets the stage for the next book in the series.

What a great prequel to a new series by a fantastic author! This introduces the reader to characters we'll see in her upcoming novel "With You Always" and thus begins another journey into history--the orphan train. The first meet-and-greet for Reverend Guy Fedell and Christine Pendleton is less than ideal! Butting heads on what they think the church must do for the orphans and widows, how can they ever come to an agreement? Or does God have plans for these two, plans incorporating both of their ideas? This tugs at your heartstrings and makes you want to find ways to help those in need around you; even a simple drink of water or an extra coat to give when the weather is cold. This has all the emotions I love to feel and connects me to each character; seeing things from their perspectives! And oh my, the romance sizzling below the surface has me swooning. I love how God brings these two together to shape them as individuals and as a couple in ministry. One of my favorite lines in the book is this; "In His Providence, He saw that the two of us working together would have much more of an impact than we could ever have individually." I simply can't wait for the full length novel to come out in June 2017!

Author Jody Hedlunds style of writing seems so effortless. The story flows freely and draws the reader in with such real-life characters. Since this is a novella it is a quick-read and will whet your appetite for the upcoming Orphan Train series. You will share in the hopeless situation German immigrant sisters, Elise, Marianne and Sophie find themselves in. Can they find a sliver of hope? Pastor Guy Bedell and wealthy socialite, Christine Pendleton seem like an unlikely pairing but both believe the other is an answer to their prayers. I am excited about this series and look forward to the first release, With You Always.
