My wife and I did this study with our small group. We would read the daily devotionals as a couple and then watch the accompanying video and discuss the week's study with the group.

    The good...

    - Daily readings are short, but have good advice/insight. This is good for a busy couple who are doing devotions together for the first time.

    - The suggested exercises are good for couples to do and can be done in a short span of time, but they still have a good impact.

    The not so good...

    - This is not a group study. Some would argue that it's not intended to be, but the fact that there is a group DVD that you are recommended to purchase says otherwise. The DVD is not good. Mostly it's random shots of the movie split up by Pastor Idleman directly quoting the couple's journal. If you need a review of what you read that week it can be helpful, but for me it felt like a waste of time. There are no group questions and a lot of the things you are told to talk about with your spouse are a little too personal for a small group setting.

    - This is not a study of the Song of Solomon. The book has scripture taken from Song of Solomon, but this is not a study of that book. How the quoted scriptures are applied are often quite a stretch and fall into the range of proof texting. If you're looking for a study/application of Song of Solomon look elsewhere.

    - There are some things Pastor Idleman says that simply aren't correct or at least badly worded. At the end of the book (pg 78, week 6, day 1) Pastor Idleman implies that Solomon once only had eyes for one woman and that she was the one he wrote Song of Solomon for. However, this isn't true or at least we really don't know that. Solomon's first wife was a princess of Egypt (1 Kings 3:1) that we know of and the marriage was for political purposes. Most scholars are unsure of who Solomon wrote Song of Solomon for and so I take issue with Pastor Idleman implying that it is otherwise.

    In Summary...

This isn't a bad study it's just not well done. It's could be a good place to start if you and your spouse have never done a devotional together before, but I struggle with how scripture is stretched to make a point. The church is struggling with Biblical literacy right now. We shouldn't be lazily applying it in order to sell more books.

Thank you FlyBy Promotions for this review copy.

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I began reading a couple's devotional book together. We've been married for 28 years now. I cannot remember doing this before though, of course, I could be mistaken. We've not seen the movie, but I was interested when I saw that Kyle Idleman was one of the authors. Kyle Idleman is the author of an excellent book I reviewed a few years ago, Not a Fan... Becoming a Completely Committed Follower of Jesus. It's about taking your relationship with God seriously. Awaken Love The Song is about taking your relationship with your husband or wife to the next level.

The Song of Solomon is a love story smack dab in the middle of the Bible. Kyle and Desirae use the scriptures extensively to parallel Solomon's story with the readers' own love story to revive things a bit between husband and wife in six key areas.

    Format:

Each week there is a different theme: Deepening Desire, Increasing Intimacy, Fighting Fair, Rediscovering Romance, Cultivating Commitment, and Fostering Faith.

Each day there is an introductory story, scripture and application.

There are discussion questions and some suggested activities.

There's room to write in margins and on lined note-taking areas.

Each day's reading is only two or three pages.

It's intended to be used daily.

    Softcover, 86 pages

    Our experience:

The hardest part of all was making time to read the daily devotion and discuss it together. Our life is running too fast with too long hours right now until just before Christmas.

We often didn't do it until late at night or were too tired.

This is the point though. We need to take time to put into our relationship and talk about things. So we're going to keep on keeping on and finish the book.

    My thoughts:

This is well-written and well thought out.

The Idlemans bring the Bible to life with examples and questions that can help married couples to talk through some of the challenges in their relationships.

We were drawn into the stories, but sometimes felt a little awkward with some of the discussions.

Some to the questions have and will lead to some difficult but good talks.

We plan to continue the readings even if they take us longer than the expected six weeks.

We like it, but this is an exceedingly personal and private kind of book to review.

"The Song: Awaken Love" is a new devotional that draws inspiration and application that finest of Hebrew love poems, The Song of Solomon.

I have heard much good about Kyle Idleman's teaching, and this was the first work of his that I've read.

It's not a full-length book, coming in at about 70 pages, yet you can tell that Kyle wants to help people to make Scripture's truth the framework of their daily lives.

In this case, he's teaching about love, marriage, and romance.

And there's a lot of material to work with. Despite the Song itself being only a few pages long- it gets lost between Proverbs and Isaiah- the verses within paint a grand and glorious picture of connubial bliss.

It's enough to remind our disillusioned generation that romance is a God-idea, and that marriage can be an increasing companionship instead of a life sentence.

I like Kyle's Biblically-grounded optimism. He thinks that marriage is "a gift from God that keeps on giving." And his view is encouraging as you read.

Listen to some of his thoughts:

"Romance is nurtured by the feeling that God has given you a treasure and that you have the rest of your life to exult in that treasure. Together you'll take on every challenge life offers. Together: a beautiful word, one that brings contentment."

"We see in our mate what our heart knows we need the most. And if it happens that both of us are seeking Christ, the effect is magnified. Our attraction to Christ enhances our attraction to each other."

"Praise wholeheartedly! Don't be afraid to fly the flag of your love for your favorite human being. Since God loves for us to encourage one another, he'll suggest little things to you as you speak, things you might not have thought of before."

"Grace is cyclical. When we give it, we get it. But in marriage it's easy to live in a cycle of 'ungrace.' This when we make it our job to fix the other person."

In other words, this is good stuff here.

I'll be filing this book in my "Marriage/Family" section. Thank you Flyby Promotions for my review copy!

Although this book is inspired by the film, The Song, it is not about the movie. Rather it is a book celebrating marriage. In this book, you can find the secret to having the best relationship any couple can have.

    So, what is the secret?

It really is simple: make God a real part of your marriage. This volume will tell you how. The Song of Solomon, from the Bible, is used as the resource and inspiration for this book. It is written by married couple Kyle and DesiRae Idleman. Kyle is the teaching pastor of the fourth largest church in America.

This book is easy to read and short, less than 70 pages. This is a six week devotional designed for husbands and wives to work on together. The whole purpose of doing this is to deepen a couple's relationship, so everything suggested is all about bringing you closer to each other. This book has great ideas for that, and, at times, will really make you laugh! It is written in a very straightforward, down to earth style.

The website for this book has all kinds of information and downloadable resources for the support, and improvement, of your marriage. I highly encourage you to check that out. I recommend this book to anyone who is married, or planning to be married. If you would like an easy way to make your relationship better, feel more love from your spouse, or give more of your love, this 5 star book is for you.
