I would recommend that before reading this book, which is the third in the series, that book one, Accused and book two, Abducted be read first. There are continuing storylines and characters that appear in all three books. So to understand certain references, readers should read the books in order. This story is set again in the fictional city of Las Playas, California.
Carly Edwards is back on beat patrol, but loses her partner, Joe, when he is injured. She begins to wonder if she still wants to be a beat cop or if she should take her career in a different direction. She is offered a job with a federal task force that would require lots of travel. The job sounds exciting to Carly, but it would take her away from her husband quite a lot. They already work odd hours as he is a policeman too and dont see as much of each other as she would like. She also worries about his new job in the gang district and him getting hurt or worse. Two rival gangs are being manipulated to start a gang war, but who is pulling the strings? What advantage would a gang war be to this puppet master? A criminal from the past is looking as if he will get off without a murder conviction, spending a lot less time in jail due to a smear campaign in the press against Carly. There is much more going on in the story, but too little space to write!
I just loved seeing the spiritual growth of Carly throughout these three books. She goes from someone who isnt even sure she believes in good, making fun of Christians to someone who prays with other people and leans on the Lord in good times and bad. I thought that the way the author wove the faith of different characters into the story was realistic and not preachy. I hope to read more of this authors previous books and any books she might write in the future. Kudos on a great trilogy!!
LauraLouisianaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Full of mystery and intrigueFebruary 1, 2014LauraLouisianaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5In "Avenged" by Janice Cantore we are once again taken to Las Playas, California. Carly Edwards is a street cop for Las Playas PD and when she and her partner find three gangbangers shot execution style the whole department fears there will be another gang war. Carly's husband, Nick, is a sergeant and is head of the gang unit. Carly fears for her husband's safety but knows that he is ultimately in God's hands. As the two dig deeper they realize that someone is purposefully trying to start a war between the two gangs in Las Playas but things are not adding up. When a reporter starts making false accusations about Carly they soon discover that someone is out to get her and will do anything to bring her down.
This is the third book in the Pacific Coast Justice series and it is another page turner. This book is full of mystery and intrigue. In this book we see how Carly and Nick have to rely on God and trust that He will see them through no matter what the future may bring. We see how even strong Christians sometimes have difficulty putting our troubles in God's hands and keeping our faith when things are really bad, but like Carly and Nick we must always turn to God during those hard times. I highly recommend reading "Accused" and "Abducted" first in order to appreciate the relationship Carly and Nick have with each other and with God. I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Tyndale House Publishers.

Avenged by Janice Cantore is the third and last book in her debut series, Pacific Coast Justice. I loved, loved, LOVED this book! I had thought the first two books in the series were as good as it could get, but boy was I wrong. Avenged was a great conclusion to the Pacific Coast Justice series and I can't wait for Janice's next book to come out!
CassandraMaineAge: 18-24Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5September 9, 2013CassandraMaineAge: 18-24Gender: femaleI think I probably would have enjoyed this book more if I had actually read the first two books in the series! The characters were well-developed and realistic. The story itself was interesting and took enough twists that I did not know exactly how it would end before I read that far.
aklinslowAnchorage, AKAge: 18-24Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Thrilling conclusion to "Pacific Coast Justice"August 30, 2013aklinslowAnchorage, AKAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"Avenged" continues the story of California police officer, Carly Edwards in this third book of the "Pacific Coast Justice Series". I read the first book, "Accused" but missed the second, "Abducted," and I did feel a little lost from time to time. So, for that reason, I would say this would not be a standalone book, but rather you need the background of the previous two to understand the story arc and conclusion of "Avenged."
That being said, Janice Cantore wrote another great, engaging novel here in "Avenged" and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There is a great action-packed storyline with the crime fighting going on, but also a good amount of spiritual lessons and Biblical application, which I love. As a reviewer of the book, I don't think I need to give another synopsis of the plot, but rather my takeaway from it, and I feel like a Scripture passage from Psalm 62 included halfway through the book really says it all: "My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me. O my people, trust in Him at all times. Pour out your heart to Him, for God is our refuge." It's a lesson that the main characters, Carly and her husband Nick, along with a number of secondary characters, learn along the way in "Avenged." It doesn't mean that everything goes smoothly in the book or that everyone lives "happily ever after," but rather that in this life, learning to trust is vital and the only way to truly survive and live, whether that's a long life here on this earth or not, as true life is that of eternal life secure in Christ, which no man can snatch away.
Cantore writes so descriptively that your imagination is able to make the book come to life, to the extent that your heart rate will increase during the intense scenes as you struggle to survive. ;-) However, I also appreciate the fact that Ms. Cantore doesn't feel the need to be overly graphic in the more violent scenes, but gives you just enough info to know what's going on but not too much to make you sick (unlike one of the books by Mel Odom I reviewed recently).
Overall, I give "Avenged" 4 stars as I book I really enjoyed and would recommend to those looking for an action-packed story to captivate them. My hesitancy to give it a full 5 stars is just for the fact that its not a standalone book, and thus not necessarily for everyone.
